7th Do Over Challenge

Es ist wieder mal Do-Over-Challenge-Zeit! Ich habe dieses Ketten- und Ohrringset mit gemischten Halbedelsteinen wie Lapislazuli, Karneol u.a. von Jeannie bekommen. Das Set ist aus ihren Anfangszeiten der Schmuckherstellung und hat sich nie verkauft. Das Ziel der Challenge ist also, etwas Neues aus einem alten Stück zu machen.

 

It's Do Over Challenge time again! I got this necklace and earring set with multi gemstone beads like lapislazuli, carnelian etc. from Jeannie. It is from her early times of making jewelry and never sold. So the task of this challenge is to overdo the piece and make something new.

 

 

Dieses Mal wollte ich gerne mit Draht spielen und habe Draht, Zangen und Denise Pecks Buch "Wire Style" rausgeholt, um mich inspirieren zu lassen. Und hier ist das Resultat: eine Variation von ,,Geometry" von Jodi L. Bombardier (S. 98).

 I decided to go with wireworked, so I pulled out my silverplated wire, pliers and Denise Peck's book "Wire Style" to get inspired. And here's the result: a variation of "Geometry" by Jodi L. Bombardier (p. 98).

 

Und mit den Resten habe ich ein Paar asymmetrische Ohrringe gemacht.

 

And with the leftovers I made a pair of asymmetrical earrings.

 

 

 

 

Und das ist übrig geblieben: ein bißchen Kette, einige Metallperlen und ein grüner Steinchip. Leider könnte ich das hübsche Metallmittelteil nicht verwenden. War einfach nicht mein Stil und ich wollte etwas für mich Tragbares machen.

 

And that is what's left over: some chain, some metal beads and a green stone chip. Sadly I couldn't use the beautiful focal piece, as it simply isn't my style and I wanted make something wearable for me.

Nachdem ich mir meine Perle ausgesucht und auf Facebook gepostet habe, erzählte mir Jeannie, dass die Gin Blossom nur ein einziges Mal in dieser Farbe gibt. Pistazie! Na, sind das nicht perfekt Herbstfarben?

 

After I chose my bead and posted it on Facebook Jeannie told me that this is a OOAK color of Gin Blossom. Pistachio! Now aren't those perfect fall colors all together?

Verschluss-Idee/Clasp Idea

Während ich an meinem Stück für den Echo Creative Club gearbeitet habe, kam mir diese Idee für einen Verschluss.

 Erinnert ihr euch noch an das Leder, das ich von einem Freund bekommen habe? Da war auch Metallic-Leder dabei und als ich Jeannies Peeled Paint Beads gesehen habe, mußte ich was damit machen.
 

Remember the batch of leather I got from a friend? There were also pieces of metallic leather included, so I got to make something with them, seeing the Peeled Paint Beads Jeannie sent me.

 

Hier ist es nun: mein glitzerndes, königliches, blumiges goldenes Lederarmband, inklusive einem Paar Ohrringe mit handgemachten Ohrhaken.

 

So here it is: my very bling, royal, flowery, golden leather cuff, including a pait of earrings with handmade earwires.

Leder, Perlen und ein bißchen Draht/Leather, Beads and some Wire

Ich habe euch ja meinen Lederschatz gezeigt und ich glaube, man hat mir die Freude über dieses Geschenk und die Großzügigkeit meines Freundes angemerkt. Als erstes habe ich mir ja eine neue Handytasche aus braunem Hochglanzleder gemacht und nun habe ich mit ein paar kleineren Stücken herumprobiert.

You know about my gifted batch of leather and the joy I felt about this gift and the generosity of my friend. The first piece I made was a cell phone pouch from a piece of high gloss leather and now I played around with some smaller pieces.

Dieser Armreif ist nach meiner Lieblingsmethode entstanden: einfach machen, nix denken und nur Dinge verwenden, die man daheim hat. Einige meiner schönsten Stücke sind so entstanden.

This cuff was created in my favorite way of creating: create as I go. No planning, just fun and looking through my stash what I got on hand to make the next step. Some of my best pieces developped like that.

Angefangen hat es mit einem dreieckigen Stück Leder, das ich ein paar Tage mit mir rumgetragen habe (ja, wirklich, ich hatte es einige Tage in meiner Hosentasche) und dann ist mir die Idee gekommen, eine Lederperle oder einen Anhänger für eine Kette zu machen. Zugeschnitten, mit Perlen und Draht verziert und aufgerollt.

I started with a triangular piece of suede, carried it around with me (yes, really, it was in my pocket for several days) and then decided to make a bead or centerpiece for a necklace or cuff from it. I cut the suede to a perfect triangle, added some wire and beads and then rolled it up.

Dann habe ich das Lederteil auf dicken, mit Plastik ummantelten Kupferdraht gezogen, den Draht mit Lederumwickelt und Perlkappen auf die Enden geklebt. Und schon hat man ein schönes, tragbares, bequemes und einzigartiges Schmuckstück!

The last step was some thick, plastic coated copper wire, some leather cord and two bead caps from my stash. I strung the centerpiece, wrapped the copper wire with leather cord and glued the bead caps to the ends. Voilá! Nice, wearable, comfortable, unique piece of jewelry.

Harter Kampf: Byzantine/Hard Fight: Byzantine

Nun komme ich endlich mal dazu, euch dieses tolle Schmuckstück auch hier auf meinem Blog vorzustellen. Beadingdaily-Leser konnten das Teil ja schon im Februar bewundern. 522 handgedrehte und handgeschnittene Ringe, 30 Lapisperlen in A-Qualität und Arbeit bis vier Uhr morgens, aber auf diese Kette bin ich sehr stolz. Das Design ist aus einem von Scott David Plumlees Büchern und nennt sich Beaded Crown Design, welches auf der Byzantine-Kette aufbaut. Ich habe versilberten 1mm-Draht verwendet.

Finally I found the time to show you this beautiful piece of jewelry here on my blog, too. I already posted this in February for the Beadingdaily readers in the forums. 522 handcoiled, handcut rings, 30 A-grade lapis beads and work until 4 am, but I am so proud of this choker. The design is from a book of Scott David Plumlee and is called Beaded Crown Design, which is based on Byzantine Chain. I used 1mm silverplated wire.

Kupfer-Seestern/Copper Starfish

Nun habe ich andlich meinen Kupfer-Seestern fertig. Mit grünen Glasperlen in der Mitte.

So finally I finished the Byzantine starfish pendant in copper. I added green glass beads in the middle.

Obwohl er die Form ein bisschen besser als mein Silber-Seestern hält, habe ich ihn doch auf ein Stück Leder geringelt, um ihm mehr Stabilität zu verleihen. Das war aber mal wieder der Beweis, dass Kupfer- und Silberdraht, obwohl sie mit demselben Durchmesser verkauft wurden, nicht denselben Durchmesser haben. Das liegt wohl am Versilbern (bei Silberdraht) und am Lackieren (beim Kupferdraht).

Although this one held its shape a bit better than the silver starfish, I also pinned it to a piece of stiff leather to make it more stable. So another proof of copper and silverplated wire, although being bought in the same gauge, having NOT the same gauge due to plating (silver) and varnishing (copper).

Seestern/Starfish

Nach einem Muster von Scott David Plumlee. Das Problem ist nur, dass das Sternchen seine Form nicht behalten wollte. Marke trauriger Seestern. :-( Was macht man also?

After a pattern by Scott David Plumlee. The problem was that the star wouldn't hold its shape. It looked like a very sad starfish. :-( So what to do?

Richtig! Man ,,ringelt" das gute Stück auf Leder und schon sieht der Anhänger richtig toll aus. Und auf der Haut ist das Leder beinahe unsichtbar. Mein neues Lieblingsstück! Ich glaube, da brauche ich noch einen in kupfer.

Right! Attach it to a piece of leather with some jumprings and the pendant looks fantastic. On the skin the leather is almost invisible. My new fav piece! I think I need one in copper, too.

Hirnverknoten für Fortgeschrittene/Brain Knotting for Advanced Chainmaillers

Jaaaaa, geschafft! Am Anfang dachte ich ja echt, dass mein Hirn mit sovielen Ringen einfach nicht zurechtkommt. Aber man hat ja eine Anleitung und irgendwann ging es dann. Und hier ist meine Version von Turkish Round! Mit Lampworkperle, selbstgebasteltem Verschluss und kleinen Anhängern. Ich habe die Lampworkperle neben dem Verschluss angebracht, da sie durch das Gewicht der Kette oben auf dem Handgelenk bleibt und nicht immer nach unten rutscht.

Falls euch die Kette an Byzantine erinnert, ist das gar nicht so falsch, denn Turkish Round ist eine Art dreiseitiges Byzantine.

Yesssssss, done! In the beginning I thought my brain just can't handle that many rings. But I had good instructions and after some time I got it. And here is my version of Turkish Round! With lampwork bead, handmade clasp and little dangles. I put the lampwork bead besides the clasp, as the bead stays on top of the wrist due to the weight of the chain.

If the weave reminds you of Byzantine, this is correct, as Turkish Round is a kind of triangle Byzantine.

Chainmaille-Abenteuer die Zweite/Chainmaille Adventures the Second

Gestern war das zweite Treffen des Jugendprojektes, bei dem ich ehrenamtlich mitarbeite. Diesmal waren die Teilnehmer zur Hälfte Kinder und zur Hälfte Erwachsene, aber ich denke, daß jeder Spaß hatte, zu lernen wie man Chainmaille-Ketten macht. Gestern haben wir uns alle an Double-Chain-Armbändern versucht und zwar mit 6mm-Ringen, die das Armband luftig und zart wirken lassen. Das Armband oben habe ich während des Treffens gemacht. Zu Hause habe ich dann noch 6/0-Rocailles hinzugefügt, die sich frei in den großen Ringen bewegen. Das Armband unten hat ein Mädchen gemacht und sie hat einen Wildlederstreifen durch die Ringe geflochten. Ich finde es super, wie das Armband zu ihren Nägeln paßt. Coooool!

Yesterday was the second meeting of the youth project I volunteered for. This time there were half children and half adults, but I think everyone had fun learning how to do chainmaille. We all made bracelets like in the picture above. It is a Double Chain with 6mm ID rings, which give the bracelet an airy, dainty appearance. The bracelet above is my own I made during the meeting and I added some 6/0 seedbeads which move freely on the big rings. The bracelet below was made by a girl and she wove a strip of dark brown suede through the rings. I especially like how the bracelet matches her nails. Coooooool!

Helm Chain

Ich habe gemerkt, daß ich euch noch gar nicht alle Chainmaille-Stücke gezeigt habe, die ich in letzter Zeit für meine Kurse gemacht habe. Gestern habe ich bereits ein Bild von einem Double-Chain-Armband mit einem großen roten Kristall gezeigt, daß ich in letzter Zeit besonders gern trage. Einfach, aber besonders schön. Eines der Mädchen aus meinem Kurs hat mich sogar gefragt, ob ich es ihr schenke. Leider mußte ich nein sagen und da hat sie sich einfach selbst eins gemacht.

I realized that I made so many show pieces for my chainmaille class and didn't show you all of them. In yesterday's post there already was the Double Chain bracelet, embellished with a fat red crystal, which is one of my favs to wear lately, as it is so simple but oh so stunning with that silver and sparkling red. One of the girls from Friday's class even asked me if she can have the bracelet. I got to say no and so she made one herself.

Und hier ist ein weiteres neues Armband: Helm Chain. Es war der erste Versuch mit Helm Chain und ich muß sagen, das Muster gefällt mir sehr gut. Helm Chain wird mit zwei verschiedenen Ringgrößen gemacht und ich habe mich für 6 und 3 mm entschieden. Und natürlich für eine meiner handgemacht Verschlüsse.

Here's another bracelet I made recently: Helm Chain. It was my first try on Helm Chain and I really like the outcome. Helm Chain is made with two different ring sizes and I chose to go with 6 and 3mm. And of course added one of my handmade clasps.

Chainmaille-Abenteuer/Chainmaille Adventure

Ich habe mich vor kurzem freiwillig für ein Jugendprojekt gemeldet, bei dem Kinder und Jugendlichen ihre handwerklichen Fähigkeiten ausbilden und kreativ werden können, ohne Kosten für sie oder ihre Eltern. Die Hauptidee dahinter ist, daß niemand ausgeschlossen wird und jeder die Möglichkeit hat teilzunehmen und alte Handwerkstraditionen, wie z.B. Weben, Holz- oder Metallarbeiten, kennezulernen. Ich war bis zum Schluß nicht sicher, ob ich das machen soll, denn ich hatte von anderen Freiwilligen gehört, daß die meisten Kinder nicht wirklich dort sein wollen und ziemlich gelangweilt sind. Aber irgendwie habe ich gezögert abzusagen. Was wirklich eine gute Entscheidung war! Gestern habe ich dann einen schönen Nachmittag mit einer Gruppe Kinder, Jugendlicher und Eltern verbracht und habe ihnen gezeigt, wie Chainmaille gemacht wird. Wir haben zusammen den ganzen Prozess kennengelernt, von einem Stück Draht über das Wickeln und Schneiden der Ringe bis hin zum fertigen Projekt. Ich habe zwei einfache Muster zum Aussuchen mitgebracht: Double Chain (Armband im Bild oben) und European 4-in-1 (im Bild unten), das klassische Muster für Kettenhemden und -panzer.

I volunteered in a youth project lately where kids can come to and spent their free time creatively and with no costs for them or their parents. So no one is left outside, which is the main idea behind it. The project is all about old crafts like weaving, woodcrafts or metalworks and the kids are able to develop their crafting skills and find out what they like. I really wasn't sure if I should do that and I was about to say no and back out. I heard in the beginning from the other volunteers, that most of the kids are bored and don't really want to be there. But somehow I hesitated to take my hat. Which was definitely the better choice! Yesterday I met a wonderful group of kids, teenagers and parents and we spent an afternoon learning how to do chainmaille. We went all the way from a piece of wire over coiling and cutting the rings to a finished piece. I brought to easy patterns with me for people to choose from: Double Chain, like it can be seen in the bracelet pictured above, and European 4-in-1 (see pic below), the classic weave for chainmaille shirts and armor.

Die meisten der Teilnehmer haben den "einfachen" Weg gewählt und haben sich für Double Chain und ein Armband entschieden. Ein Junge hat die Hälfte seiner Kette mit Ringen hergestellt und dann, für mehr Tragekomfort, die andere Hälfte durch einen Streifen Wildleder ersetzt. Er hat sogar einen Verschluss gebastelt, ohne daß ich es ihm gezeigt hätte! Eine junge Dame hat durch ihr fertiges Armband einen dünne Streifen Wildleder gewoben, was super aussah. Aber einen gab es, der sich tapfer durch sein Projekt gekämpft hat. Er wollte unbedingt ein Kettenhemd für sich machen (oder zumndest ein Stück :-)). Er war erst neun Jahre alt und kam ab und zu zu mir, um mich zu fragen, ob ich ihm das Kettengewebe wieder flach auf den Tisch legen könnte (was der eigentlich kompliziert Teil bei 4-in-1 ist). Und dann hat er die nächsten Ringe drangebastelt. Mit ein bißchen Hilfe konnte er am Ende ein kleines Stück European 4-in-1 mit nach Hause nehmen. Tolles Kind!

Most of the participants chose to go the "easy" way and try their hand on Double Chain to make a bracelet. They did a great job. One boy finished half of necklace and added a length of black suede for the other half to add comfort in wearing it. He also made a hook and eye clasp without me showing him! A young lady finished her Double Chain bracelet with a thin strip of suede woven through the rings. But then there was this boy who decided to make himself a chainmaille shirt (or at least a piece of it :-)). He was only nine years old, but he was working two hours on it, coming to me now and then asking me if I can lay the sheet flat on the table for him (which is the tricky part in 4-in1), and then he added the next rings. With some help he was able to finish a small sheet of European 4-in-1. How cool is that? Great kid!

Artfire Shop: Armbänder/Bracelets

Diese Woche gibt es zwei neue Armbänder im Shop. Eins ist das Japanese 12-in-2 Blumenarmband.

This week I listed two of my bracelets. One is the Japanese 12-in-2 flower bracelet from the post about my chainmaille classes. I really love that flower pattern.



Das andere ist mein Poseidon in Borneo-Armband, von dem ich neue Fotos gemacht und wieder in den Shop eingestellt habe.

Japanese 12-in-2

Für meine Chainmaille-Kurse habe ich einige Schaustücke gemacht, damit meine Teilnehmer was zum Anschauen hatte. Es gibt viele Webarten und Gruppen von Webarten and ich habe versucht, für jede Gruppe ein Beispiel zu machen. Japenese 12-in-2 ist ein Muster aus zwei Ringgrößen und ergibt ein tolles Blumenmuster. Beim Perlentauschen mit einer Freundin hatte ich das Glück, ein Set für ein Japanese-12-in-2-Armband zu bekommen. So war die Herstellung dieses Schmuckstückes recht einfach, ohne daß ich erst aufwendig die Ringe herstellen mußte.

For my chainmaille classes I did some show pieces for my students to see. There are a lot of weaves and "families" of weaves and I tried to make one for every family. Japanese 12-in-2 is a beautiful weave made from 2 sizes of rings and makes for nice flower shapes. I had the luck to get a chainmaille kit by swapping beads with a friend and so I could make this bracelet without coiling my own rings.

Chainmaille-Kurse/Chainmaille Classes

Ich hatte mal wieder die Freude, einen Kurs geben zu dürfen, diesmal über Chainmaille (ich nenne den Kurs liebevoll ,,Kettenhemdem stricken" und nein, man braucht dafür keine Stahlwolle ;-)). Ich wollte den Teilnehmern nicht nur die Technik beibringen, sondern ihnen auch einige Hintergrundinformationen über Handwerkskunst und Geschichte vermitteln. Leider haben sich nur drei Teilnehmer angemeldet, von denen am Ende nur zwei da waren. Aber so konnte ich den beiden sehr viel mehr Zeit und Aufmerksamkeit widmen.

I once again had the joy of teaching a class, this time one about chainmaille. It was not only about learning a certain weave, but get a bit of background information about craftmanship, technique and history. Sadly there were only three people signing up and in the end only two showed up, but so there was much more one-on-one time.

Beaded Byzantine Chain

Da es nur zwei Teilnehmer waren, habe ich ihnen die Wahl des Kettenmusters überlassen. Einer hat sich Full Persian (Beinahe-Herzinfarkt meinerseits!) ausgesucht und hat einen harten Kampf mit den ersten paar Zentimetern auszufechten. Aber er hat's geschafft und ein Konfirmationsgeschenk für seine Schwester gemacht. Gut gemacht!

As there were only two students I let them choose the weave they want to make. One went for Full Persian (I almost had a heart attack!) and he had a tough time weaving the first inch. But he did it: a bracelet as a confirmation gift for his little sister. Great work!

Die zweite Teilnehmerin hat die endlosen Varianten von Byzantine ausprobiert: die ganz normale Kette, dann Romanov und schließlich auch noch Box Chain (auch Inca Puno genannt, s. unten).

Als kleine Zugabe habe ich ihnen noch gezeigt, wie man einen Verschluß aus Draht macht. Normalerweise mache ich die Verschlüsse für alle Teilnehmern und lasse sie aussuchen,welcher ihnen gefällt. Kleiner Teilnehmerzahlen haben ihre Vorteile.

As a little bonus I also taught them how to make a wire clasp. Usually I make them for all the students and let them pick the one they want. Sometimes small classes have advantages.

Artfire: Frühlingsohrringe/Springy Earrings

Erinnern die euch nicht schon an den Frühling? Diese Woche neu im Artfire-Shop sind diese Ohrringe mit frühlingsgrünen Glasperlen und Kupferblättern. Alles von mir handgemacht, inklusive den Ohrhaken.

Don't they remind you of spring? This week's Artfire addition is a pair of spring green and copper leaf earrings. All wirework including earrings is handmade by me.


Sie sind wirklich bequem zu tragen und haben eine tolle Länge./They are so comfortable to wear and have a nice length.

Während ich auf die letzten Bauteile für meine Pfeile warte, zeige ich euch einige Sachen aus Kupferdraht, die ich vor kurzem gemacht habe, inspiriert von dem Buch ,,Contemporary Copper Jewelry". Das erste Bild zeigt einige Broschen, die ich gemacht habe. Die beiden ersten sind Bögen (natürlich ;-)), die ich ,,erfunden" habe, während ich mit dem Draht herumgespielt habe. Die rechte Anstecknadel ist ein Projekt aus dem Buch.

While I'm waiting for the last supplies to finish my arrows I'd like to show you some things made from copper wire, inspired by the book "Contemporary Copper Jewelry". The first picture shows some pins I made. The first two are bows (of course ;-)), which I "invented" while playing with the wire and thought that a bow shape might be easy to do. I even made a bowstring and a handle from some thinner gauge. The pin on the far right is a project from the book.

Dieses Armband ist eine Kombination von zwei Armband-Projekten aus dem Buch. Eins mit den Blattformen und eins mit den umwickelten Perlen und ich dachte, sie würden gut in einem Armband wirken. Die Perlen sind facettierter Cherry-,,Quarz" (auch bekannt als Glas).

That bracelet is a combination of two bracelet projects from the book. One is made with the leaf shapes in between the beads and one with the wired beads. I decided those two projects would look nice combined and here's my interpretation. The beads are faceted cherry "quartz" (aka glass).

Heute gibt es nochmal Bäume zu sehen und zwar die von Moira. Moira ist die Künstlerin hinter Mystic Pesto and sie ist sehr talentiert im Arbeiten mit Draht. Ich mag besonders ihre verschiedenen Chainmaille-Designs, denen sie immer eine persönliche Note verleiht, indem sie eine Kleinigkeit verändert. Einen ihrer Lebensbäume liebe ich ganz besonders und zwar den auf dem zweiten Bild. Sie hat einfach die Perlen weggelassen und nur Draht in drei Farben verwendet. Ist der nicht toll?

Today I'd like to share with you the trees of life mady by Moira. Moira is the artist behind Mystic Pesto and she's incredibly talented with wire. I especially love her chainmaille designs and she often comes up with new weaves she tried and modified, so they have a kind of "personal note". One of her trees really amazed me, as she simply left out the beads and made an only wire tree with three colors of wire. Now how cool is that?
