Paint Party Friday: Back again with so many ideas!

I haven't joined PPF for such a long time! Can't believe it! But here I am, as my lovely friend Nicole of Beadwright saw some of my latest creations and asked, if I would join in again. How could I forget about the lovely folks at PPF?

So what am I up to? A short time before Christmas 2019 I ordered some lovely wooden printing blocks at a small UK based business called The Arty Crafty Place. I wanted more designs lately, to design more fabric and maybe greeting cards, but can't afford to buy more right now. So what to do? Design my own! But how? First step was ofc paper and pencil and some very basic designs.

Then I remembered that we once did linocut/linoprint back in school (ages ago *LOL*).

I did some test prints on paper. I really like how they turned out.

I might make some cards or paintings with them in the future, but for now I made a set of placemats for our home. Even DH fell in love with them and so did I. I even tie dyed the fabric, as I didn't have enough of the color I wanted. Combination of bought wooden blocks and my own linocut ones.

That's the other side, so you can turn them over, if neccessary.

Die Bluse: Noch'n Versuch/The Blouse: Another attempt

Nachdem ich nun einige Male (eher erfolglos) versucht habe, ein kostenloses Blusenmuster an meine Maße anzupassen, habe ich es nun mal mit einem Kaufmuster probiert. Von BurdaStyle gibt es inzwischen auch sehr schöne Muster in großen Größen, bei denen auch die Kurven ein wenig besser berücksichtigt sind. Und da sind wir nun, mit einem preiswerten Karostoff.

After several (failed) attempts of trying to adjust a free blouse pattern to my personal size, I decided to try it with a bought pattern. BurdaStyle recently have some very nice plus-size patterns in their collection, considering us curvy ladies, too. And here we are with an inexpensive ginham fabric.

Es sieht zumindest schon mal aus wie eine Bluse und sie passt auch. Allerdings ist die Länge für die im Muster angegebene Körpergröße von 168 cm viel zu lang. Ich bin sogar etwas größer und kann das als Kleid tragen. Selbst die kürzere Version der Bluse ist noch zu lang für mich. Aber kürzen kann man ja immer, andersrum wird's schwierig. ;) Ich bin gespannt auf das Endergebnis.

It already looks like a blouse and also fits. But the length is questionable for the body height of 168 cm listed in the pattern. I'm a bit taller and I can wear this as a dress. Even the shorter version is much too long for me. But you can always shorten a piece, while vice versa is a wee bit more difficult. ;) Looking forward to the outcome of this.

A Quilting Life's BOM 2019: January Block 3

Der nächste Januar BOM von A Quilting Life's Mystery BOM 2019 ist fertig. Ich habe Block 2 ausgelassen und werde ihn vielleicht später noch machen, also seht ihr hier schon Block 3 von der Liste. Ich habe dieses Mal orangefarbene Stoffe rausgesucht. Es macht Spaß, mit den Quadraten und dem Layout herumzuprobieren, bevor man den Block zusammennäht.

I finished the next BOM for A Quilting Life's Mystery BOM 2019. I left out block 2 and will eventuall make that one later, so this already block 3 on the list. I used orange fabrics for this one. Fun to play around with the layout before sewing the squares together.

Abgehobenes Nachthemd/ Space nightshirt

Ich bin ziemlich sicher, dass dieser Stoff eigentlich für kleine Jungs entworfen wurde, aber wen juckt das? :) Wenn man von Raumfahrt und Science Fiction à la Enterprise und Co. so fasziniert ist wie ich, dann darf es auch mal ein Raumfahrer-Nachthemd sein. Und nachdem meine Mutter es gesehen hat, möchte sie nun auch eins haben. Allerdings ohne Raumschiffe. ;)

I'm pretty sure, that this fabric was originally designed for little boys, but who cares? :) When someone is fascinated by all things concerning space and science fiction à la Enterprise like I am, than I can sew myself a space nightshirt, too. My Mom saw it and now wants one, too, but without the spaceships. ;)

Testnähen/Test sewing

So langsam wird's was mit dem Anpassen meines Blusenschnittmusters. Den ersten Test mit diesem Muster habe ich 2015 gemacht, allerdings hat der dann nicht wirklich gut gepasst (ich konnte die Arme nicht bewegen) und ich hatte damals nicht die Kenntnisse, den Schnitt weiter anzupassen. Aber nach viel Lesen, Herumprobieren und Recherchieren fehlen bei Test Nr. 2 nur noch die Knöpfe. Vielleicht kann ich dann endlich die Schönen Stoffe rauskramen. :)

Slowly getting there with the adjustment of this blouse pattern. I did the first test with this pattern in 2015, but it didn't really fit (couldn't move my arms) and I didn't have the knowledge to make it better back then. Now after lots of reading, research and trial and error, there are only the buttons missing in test no 2. Then I think I have to pull out the nice fabrics.

A Quilting Life's BOM 2019: January Block 1

Inspiriert durch ein paar Damen in einer meiner FB-Gruppen nehme ich dieses Jahr auch mal an einem BOM teil. Dabei näht man jeden Monat einen oder mehrere Quiltblocks, die man am Ende des Jahres dann zusammenfügt. Ich wollte einen einfachen BOM haben, bei dem man auch noch seinen Stoffvorrat aufbrauchen kann und so habe ich mich für 

A Quilting Life's BOM entschieden, dermit Half Square Triangles arbeitet. Ich weiß nicht, ob ich alle 25 angebotenen Blocks machen werde und was am Ende daraus wird, aber das sehen wri dann. Der erste gefällt mir schon mal super. Ich werde jeden Block in einer anderen Farbe machen, so dass am Ende ein Regenbogen entsteht. Ich bin gespannt.

One of my groups on FB inspired me to join a BOM quilting event in 2019. I wanted a simple one, that has also a stash busting option, so I went for A Quilting Life's BOM, that uses half square triangles. Not sure, if I will do all 25 blocks offered and what to do with them in the end, but we will see. Love the first one. Will try with a rainbow theme with a single color for each block.

Kurzer Schlafanzug/Pyjamas

Zum Geburtstag habe ich letztes Jahr neben anderen Stoffen auch noch zwei Stücke Baumwolljersey bekommen, mit dem Auftrag, etwas für mich zu nähen. Also habe ich mir einen kurzen Schlafanzug genäht, nachdem das mit dem Jerseynähen so gut klappt. :)

Besides other fabrics I also got two pieces of cotton jersey for my birthday last year, with the order to make something for myself. I made myself short pyjamas, since sewing jersey isn't a problem any longer. :)

 

Eine passende Hose gibt's natürlich auch. Die Schnittmuster stammt aus dem Buch ,,Jersey nähen".

I also made matching pants. The patterns are from the book "Jersey nähen" (which might be available in English, too).

Motivationshose/Motivation Pants

 

Noch ein Kleidungsstück fertig! Nachdem ich seit mittlerweile einem Jahr regelmäßig zu Hause ein wenig Sport treibe (Fitness, Rückengymnastik, Cardiotraining etc.), habe ich mir aus dem witzigen Kassettenstoff eine Leggins genäht. Manchmal braucht man einfach eine Motivationshose. Und ja, ihr dürft lachen. ;)

Another piece of clothing finished! Since I developped a sports routine and work out at home at least four or five times a week for over a year now (fitness, back exercises, cardio training etc.), I sewed myself a pair of leggings from this fun tape print fabric. Sometimes you need a pair of motivation pants, right? And yes, you're allowed to laugh. ;)

Lady Topas Top von Mialuna

Wie begann das Jahr bei Kokopelli Design? An der Nähmaschine, WIPs fertig nähen. Ich hatte mal angefangen, Kleidung aus Jersey zu nähen, aber meine Nähamschine mochte den Stoff so gar nicht, also habe ich das Teil weggelegt und die restlichen Stoffe eingemottet. Nachdem ich im Internet ein wenig recherchiert habe,  wie ich meine Maschine doch noch dazu bewegen kann, Jersey zu nähen und nun auch im Besitz einer Overlockmaschine bin, konnte ich nun endlich ein Shirt fertig nähen, das  ich schon zwei Jahre rumliegen hatte. Das Lady Topas Top von Mialuna. Noch kein Meisterwerk, aber für ein Sommertop für zu Hause und im Garten wird es schon seinen Zweck erfüllen. Schaut mal wieder rein, da es bald noch mehr Klamotten zu sehen gibt.

So how did the new year start at Kokopelli Design's workshop? On the sewing machine, finishing WIPs. I once started sewing cloths from jersey fabrics, but my sewing machine didn't like sewing jersey fabric, so I put away some already cut out projects. Now, after doing some research on how to make my machine sew jersey fabrics and also got myself an overlock machine, I finished a shirt, I had laying around for two years now. The Lady Topas Top by Mialuna. Not a masterpiece, but will do for a summer top, wearing at home or in the garden. Stay tuned, as there are more cloths to see soon.

Einfache Weihnachtskarte/Easy Christmas Card

Schnelle und einfach Weihnachtskarte aus Stoffresten. Einfach die Streifen auf einen Trägerstoff nähen, oben den kleinen Stern nicht vergessen, dann die Stoffreste in Baumform schneiden und fertig. Besonders interessant für alle, die nähen und quilten. Wir haben ja immer viele Stoffreste rumliegen.

Quick and easy Christmas card I made from fabric scraps. Sew the strips to the background fabric, don't forget to add a little star at the top, then trim the fabric into a tree shape. That's it. Especially interesting for the quilters and sewers among us. We have tons of scraps. 

Ofenhandschuhe XXL/Oven Mitts XXL

Meine Eltern wollten gerne neue Ofenhandschuhe haben, also habe ich versprochen, welche zu nähen. Beim Nähen des Prototypen stellte sich heraus, dass das Ding zu eng ist und das, obwohl ich an der Hand/am Arm meines Papas Maß genommen hatte (von der kompliziert geschriebenen Anleitung und dem völlig unnötigen Herumgepfriemele mit Schrägband mal ganz zu schweigen). Nach dem Prototypen war dann erstmal die Luft raus. Wenigstens passt er mir. ;)

My parents requested a new pair of oven mitts, so I promised to sew them some. After sewing up a prototype, it turned out that it was way too tight around Dad's arm (not to mention the more than complicated pattern and the absolute needless use of bias tape in it). After finishing the prototype my desire to make an adjusted air was completely gone. At least the prototype fits me. ;)

Aber dann bin ich über die wunderbare Anleitung von Westfalenstoffe getolpert und habe danach XXL-Ofenhandschuhe für den Herrn mit den Popeye-Unterarmen (aka Papa) genäht. Und weil ich ja ein Fan von Jeans-Recycling bin (regelmäßige Leser wissen das), besteht der Außenstoff komplett aus wiederverwendeten Hosen. Gefüttert habe ich sie mit Baumwollstoff.

But then I came across the fantastic tutorial by Westfalenstoffe and made a pair of XXL oven mitts for the gentleman with the Popeye forearms (aka Dad). And since I'm a fan of denim recycling (regular readers know about that fact), I made the outside completely out of recycled jeans. The mitts are lined with cotton fabric.

 

Was man aus alten Handtüchern machen kann/What to do with old towels

Leute, die regelmäßig meine Seite und meinen Blog verfolgen, wissen dass ich Recycling-/Upcyclingprojekte sehr mag, egal ob aus abgetragenen Jeans, Kaffeeverpackungen oder alten Handtüchern. Dieses Mal mussten ein paar alte Handtücher dran glauben und wurden als Haartrockenturban und als Abwaschlappen wiedergeboren.

Das Muster für den Handtuchturban ist aus der Landlust 03/2018 und findet sich hier. Ich habe allerdings kein Schrägband verwendet, sondern einfach die Webkante vom Handtuch als Kante beim Zuschnitt eingeplant.

People who follow my page or read my blog on a regular basis, know that I love recycling/upcycling old things. Be it worn out jeans, coffee packages or towels. This time I cut up some towels and made some hair drying turbans for Mom and me. The rest went into dish cloths.

The pattern for the turban is in German, but the template can be found on page 3. Enlarge to 200%, cut two pieces, sew together and add a button to the wide side and a loop to the narrow side, that's it. When cutting the pieces, use the towel edge, so you won't need the bias tape mentioned in the pattern.

A stack of handmade clothes......

A stack of handmade clothes.....knitted, crocheted, sewn.....handmade by me with one exception: the brown knitted Norwegian cardigan at the base of the stack. My Mom made two of them (one for her and one for my Dad) back in the early 1970's, when wool wasn't readily available through online shops and couldn't be shipped all over the world. Her aunt ordered it for her, as she had contacts in the knitting and embroidery scene. My Mom gave me that cardigan some years ago, as she knew I''m attached to it and the memories woven into it. A heirloom piece! (And scratchy as hell! *LOL*)

Why I do tell this story? Because this was the cardigan that started my journey of handmade clothes and I'd love to encourage others to try and make their own garments, too. So prepare for some reading. ;)

Around the same time I got the cardi I took a sewing class and tailored myself a pair of linen pants (third from top) which has the perfect fit for me (a seamstress was teaching the class and she did a great job!). At home I sewed myself a blouse (fourth from top). And then I came across Crochetverse's Garden Party Jacket CAL (fifth from top), so why not crocheting a piece of garment? The pattern was great, while the fit, due to my curvy outine, wasn't that great. But what? I was so proud of that first crocheted piece, that I immediately started another one: KT & the Squid's Kram Cardi (second from top). And boy do I love that cardigan! Warm, cosy, perfect loose fit, great yarn and so easy to make due to a great pattern. And those buttons! Perfect find!

A bit later I came across the Drops Garnstudio page........don't ask, but I saved dozens of patterns on the first days. *LOL* Then I decided to give the Christel Vest (top of the stack) a try. What I absolutely love about the Drops patterns is, that they are available up to sizes XXL or even XXXL, so curvy ladies don't have to do their own math and can start right away. The Christel Vest was made during a camper holiday in beautiful October last year and again I found the perfect buttons for the vest. And then my love for Norwegian/Scandinavian sweaters hit in......you know the heirloom cardi Mom gave me........

The Arctic Circle Sweater was born, made from another Drops pattern and the lovely original yarn Drops Nepal, and I never ever had a sweater fitting so perfectly. I love, that's all I can say. Of course I had to practice the Fair Isle knitting on another piece, which led to the Winter Berry Cushion, but otherwise I never knitted anything else than socks.

Next in line became Linda Skuja's Convergence Top (5th from bottom). I saw it and had to have it. Skinny model with almost no curves.......ok.......I think I can do that. With some help and tips from Canadutch and her version of the top, some online research about how to shape crochet garment and trial and error I made it. I noted my changes on the Ravelry project page linked above, so others can use them, too. I do this with all my projects, as it's a great tool to use. Next one in line was the Drops Country Dream Tunic, which I made more a casual sweater than a tunic. Loved the effect the variegated yarn adds to this piece.

Then another I HAVE TO MAKE THIS moment came with Fran Morgan's Granny Stripe Top (2nd from bottom). I did like the overall idea and the look of this top, but I knew I had to add some shaping to it to make it wearable for me. So I did it (notes again on the Ravelry project page) and it turned out perfect. I didn't wear it yet, but fall and winter will be here soon, so I'm looking forward to wearing it for the first time.

Did you read all through it? Looks like a straight journey, right? But no, it wasn't. There were struggles with the fit, with gauge swatches, with finding a substitute yarn and there were failures like the beautiful Lilla Bjorn Sweater. I loved this sweater, the look, the idea, all........and then, almost finished, I had to frog it, as I couldn't make it fit to my body, not for the life of me. But in the end I have 10 finished pieces on my list (and two WIPs) and they are all wearable.

So if you always thought about trying and making your own piece of garment, just get started, with a first simple piece, sewn, knitted, crocheted, whatever you like. They won't be perfect in the beginning, but with every piece you will learn and you will get better. So do it! :)

Kleine Bestellung aus Jeans/Little order made from jeans

Eine kleine Bestellung fertig gemacht. Die Freundin meiner Nicht möchte unbedingt auch so eine Jeanstasche haben, wie ich sie für meine Nichte vor einigen Jahren gemacht habe. Kein Problem! Man hat ja eine ,,kleine" Auswahl an abgelegten Jeans vorrätig. Bärchen, handgewebtes Band, und Knopf dran und schon ist das Einzelstück fertig.

A little order fulfilled. My niece's friend asked for a jeans bag for her birthday, the same kind I made for my niece years ago. No problem, as I have quite a collection of worn out jeans at home. Little bear, handwoven ribbon and a button were also in my stash.

Kaffe Fusion Blanket: Das Material/The materials

Nachdem ich die Kaffe Fusion Decke zum ersten Mal gesehen habe, hat mich das Muster nicht mehr losgelassen und ich war auf der Suche nach Material, am besten kombiniert mit Dingen aus meinem Vorrat. Und dann sind mir gestern in einem neu entdeckten Wolle- und Stoffladen die perfekten Stoffe für das ins Auge gefasste Garn über den Weg gelaufen (die Baumwolle habe ich letztes Jahr gekauft ;)).

Since I first saw the Kaffe Fusion Blanket, I was looking for materials to make it. Especially if some of them came from my growing stash. And yesterday I stumbled upon the perfect fabrics in a newly discovered yarn and fabric shop. The fabrics perfectly match the yarn I had in mind for the blanket (bought that cotton last year ;)).

Die beiden Stoffe passen gut zusammen, da sie aus der gleichen Kollektion stammen und auf beiden die Frösche zu finden sind (auf dem linken schaut er gerade noch raus direkt über dem Etikett).

Both fabrics are the perfect match, as they come from the same collection and both have the same frogs on it (on the left you can see one peeking out just above the label).

Geburtstagsgeschenk: Hosentasche/Birthday Gift: Jeans Bag

Endlich kann ich euch die tolle Tasche zeigen, die ich für meine Schwägerin gemacht habe. Eine kleine Vorschau gab es ja schon.

Die süße Kinderjeans haben alle meine Nichten getragen und das Jeans-Patchwork enthält auch eine Jeans meines Bruders und so ist die Tasche eine tolle Erinnerung an ihre Lieben, jedes Mal wenn meine Schwägerin die Tasche benutzt.

 

The cute pair of jeans was worn by all of my nieces and the jeans patchwork contains a pair of jeans from my brother, so my SIL has a great memory of her loved ones every time she uses the bag.

Ich denke, ich bin meinem Ziel, mir eigene Kleidung nähen zu können, ein gutes Stück näher gekommen. Nach der Hose ist nun die Musterbluse fertig. Nun geht's auf Stoffsuche.

 

I think I'm one step closer of being able to sew my own clothes. After a pair of trousers I made myself a test blouse of a pattern I adjusted to my measurements. Now on to looking for fabric.

Fast fertig! Nur die Knöpfe und Knopflöcher fehlen noch. Ich kann gar nicht glauben, dass sie wirklich passt mit den Musteränderungen, die ich gemacht habe. :)

 

Almost finished. Only the buttons and buttonholes are missing. Can't believe it fits with the pattern adjustments I made. :)
