A Time To Stitch 8: What's your bag?

Finally after some months of thinking, designing, creating and waiting the big reveal of ATTS 8 is here. Thank you, Christine and Therese for hosting the event for the 8th time now. Love it!!!!

 

 

So what's my bag? It clearly is an amulet bag and since my totem animal is the polar bear it has to be bear-themed. Plus I was able to work with my two favorite materials: leather and beads. But there is much more about it. So first I made the two-drop peyote beaded paw square and added it to a handsewn deerskin amulet bag. When I thought about embellishment I found a few special pieces some dear friends, Nicole and Ursel once sent me.

 

The handmade antler button was once bought and made in Germany, then brought to the US and now sent back to me. How awesome is that? Thanky, Ursel! :)

 

Next the tin cones: I love the sound they make when the fringe moves! Simply love it. Four of the tin cones (the outer two on each side) were sent to me all the way from the Pacific Northwest by my dear friend Nicole. Thank you so much, Nicole! :)

 

I would have loved to make a beaded pendant form the black bear claw I had in my stash for years, but I couldn't gather enough infos to make the best of it, so it's in the phot unbeaded.

 

So this bag will always remember me of two dear friends I have never met in person.

A Time To Stitch 5: Drei Armbänder/Three Bracelets

First I have to say a BIG thank you to our wonderful hosts Christine and Therese for organizing this challenge! This is my second time participating in ATTS and I guess the badge explains it all in a few words, what ATTS 5 is all about.

 

 

So what stitch did I choose? I have this fabulous beading book by Diane Fitzgerald, called “Zulu Inspired Beadwork”. All my beading life I’ve been in love with traditional beadwork, especially with Native American and African beadwork of all kinds. I thought about Ndebele/Herringbone, Peyote and all the stitches wellknown to the beading community. But I chose to go with two stitches not so well known. Both are from Diane’s book.

One is Popcorn stitch, which is easy to do and makes fun summer bracelets and necklaces. Depending on size, shape and color of your beads your piece can be casual, elegant or bold. I recommend doing this stitch with beading thread like Nymo or C-Lon, not with Fireline, so the piece stays flexible and is comfortable to wear. I only made two bracelets with popcorn stitch.

 One with size 8/0 seedbeads in rainbow colors, interrupted by sections in black and white:

And one with 10/0 red whiteheart seedbeads, also interrupted by black and white sections:
   

 

 The second stitch I used is Switchback Chain with which I already made a lot of bracelets, for swaps, giveaways and for myself. The first one is my all-time favorite and was made a little longer ago. Black 11/0 seedbeads encase a colorful bead soup of seed and bugle beads. Fun, isn’t it? I LOVE this bracelet!
 

 

The second one is made with black 11/0  seedbeads and 5 mm bugle beads in sunny colors. Also fun to wear!

 

For the last I changed the base bead color to a pearlized white and used 3mm Miyuki cubes in ocean colors to fill the gaps. I used one of my favorite buttons in my collection: a Bohemian glass button. This look soooooo good on suntanned skin and the alternating rows make it look like waves on your wrist!

Keltischer Knoten - zweiter Versuch/Celtic Trefoil - Second Attempt

 

Die erste Schicht im zweiten Versuch liegt schon mal flacher als im ersten. Gute Voraussetzungen für die zweite Schicht. Diesmal gibt es einen rot-schwarzen Knoten und wenn ich noch Lust auf einen dritten habe, dann gibt's noch ein blaues Farbschema, das mir zusagt.

 

The first layer in the second attempt is a lot flatter than in the first one. Good for the second layer. This time the color scheme is read and black. And there is a blue color scheme that I like if I ever come to make a third one.

Keltischer Knoten fertig/Celtic Trefoil finished

Der Dreiecksknoten von gestern ist fertig. Er gefällt mir gut, obwohl ich nicht ganz zufrieden mit ihm bin.

 

The trefoil I started yesterday is finished. I really like it, although I'm not completely happy with it.

 

 

Ich denke, das Thema hier ist die Fadenspannung in der ersten Schicht von Perlen. Da habe ich den Faden ein bisschen zu stramm angezogen und das Teil hat sich gewölbt. Das schreit nach einem zweiten Versuch. :)

 

I think the problem in this piece is the thread tension in the first layer. I pulled the thread a little bit too tight and the piece didn't stay flat. Soooooooooo I think there will be a second attempt. :)

Keltischer Dreiecksknoten/Celtic Trefoil

Inspiriert von der lieben Erika habe ich mit einem keltischen Dreiecksknoten aus Delicas angefangen. Das Muster ist aus Diane Fitzgeralds Buch ,,Shaped Beadwork".

 

Inspired by my dear beading friend Erika I started a Celtic trefoil with delicas. The pattern is from Diane Fitzgerald's book "Shaped Beadwork".

 

 

Bin mal gespannt, wie er aussieht, wenn er fertig ist.

 

Can't wait to see it finished.

ECC September: Diatom

Ich bin ganz verliebt in die Farben dieses Stücks. Ich bin aber noch nicht sicher, was es mal werden wird: ein Schlüsselanhänger, ein Kettenanhänger, der Hingucker für ein Armband? Aber mir gefällt es sehr gut, vor allem dass die Rocailles so gut mit den Farben in Jeannies Diatom-Anhänger harmonieren.

I'm deeply in love with the colors in this piece. I'm still not sure what it will be in the end: a keychain, a pendant, the centerpiece of a cuff? But I really love how this turned out and how the seedies match the colors in Jeannie's Diatom pendant.

Die Schöpfungsgeschichte
Eine Legende der Indianer im Westen Kanadas

     

Am Anfang war nichts außer Wasser. Die einzigen Lebewesen auf der Welt waren die Tiere, die im und auf dem Wasser lebten. Da fiel eine Frau herab aus der Himmelswelt. Zwei Loon-Enten legten sie auf den Rücken der Großen Schildkröte. Sie brachten ein wenig Erde vom Grund des Meeres und legten sie um den Rand des Schildkrötenpanzers. So entstand trockenes Land. Dieses Land wuchs von allen Seiten und wurde grösser und grösser, bis sich daraus ein riesiges Land formte, eines auf dem Bäume und andere Pflanzen wachsen konnten. Dieses riesige Land wurde auf dem Rücken der Großen Schildkröte geboren und das ist so bis heute. Die Große Schildkröte trägt immer noch die Erde auf ihrem Rücken.

Blog Hop Nr. 2 wurde von Leah Curtis von The Beady Eyed Bunny organisiert und es ging darum, eine Volksgruppe oder eine Epoche schmucktechnisch zu bearbeiten. Bei mir waren es, wen wundert es, die Indianer. Und ich habe mich nicht direkt für ein fertiges Schmuckstück entschieden, sondern für eine Perlenrosette mit einem Schildkrötenmotiv. Ich habe immer einige Perlenrosetten auf Vorrat, da sie sich hervorragend zum Verzieren von Lederwaren eignen, wie ihr unten in der kleinen Bildergalerie sehen könnt.

 

 

Creation Story 

A legend of Indian tribes in Western Canada

In the beginning there was nothing but water. The only creatures in the world were the animals that live in and on the water. Then down from the sky world a woman fell. Two loons placed her on the back of the Great Turtle. Some earth was brought up from the bottom of the sea, and placed around the edge of the Great Turtle's shell. This was the beginning of dry land. On all sides, the land grew larger and larger, until at last it formed a great country, one where trees and other plants could live and grow. All this country was born on the back of Great Turtle, and it is so today. Great Turtle still bears the earth on his back.

Blog hop no 2 is hosted by Leah Curtis of The Beady Eyed Bunny and was about making a piece of jewelry for a special era or people. In my case I chose Native Americans, which is not really a surprise. I didn't choose to make a piece of jewelry, but a beaded rosette with a turtle motive. I always have some beaded rosettes ready made in my stash as they are great for decorating leather items, as you can see below in the photo gallery of some of my art.

Echo Creative Club: Februar/February

Gerperlter Talisman/Beaded Talisman

Vor einiger Zeit habe ich euch eine angefangene Perlenfassung für eine Münze gezeigt, die ich vermutlich aus Versehen (statt eines 1-Euro-Stückes) als Wechselgeld bekommen habe. Es ist eine bulgarische 1-Lev-Münze und das Jesusbild auf der Rückseite fand ich ganz hübsch, zum Beispiel als Talisman fürs Auto oder als Schlüsselanhänger.

Some time ago I started a beaded bezel  for a coin I accidentally got as change (instead of a 1 Euro coin). It's a Bulgarian 1 Lev coin and I like the Jesus picture on the reverse side. Now that I finished the bezel and the bail, it could be a talisman for rearview in your car or a keychain.

Endlich mal wieder Perlen/Finally beads again

Ich habe diese bulgarische Münze unter meinem Münzgeld gefunden. Ich denke mal, ich habe sie aus Versehen als Wechselgeld bekommen, da sie der 1-Euro-Münze sehr ähnlich sieht. Und die Kehrseite hat ein sehr schönes Bild und so mache ich mal einen geperlten Anhänger draus, vielleicht für den Rückspiegel meines Autos. Immerhin hat mich diese Münze wieder zum Perlen gebracht. :)

 

By accident I got this Bulgarian coin and thought the reverse side might look good as a pendant, maybe as a rearview dangle in my car. I think I got this coin as change, as it looks exactly like a Euro coin, but I didn't realize it wasn't. At least it got me back to beading. :)

Sunburst Rosette

 

Endlich kann ich euch die fertige Perlenrosette zeigen. Eine so große habe ich noch nie gemacht: 7,5 cm im Durchmesser, 11/0-Rocailles, eine Metallniete in der Mitte, gestickt auf Nicole's Bead Backing und versäubert mit weichem Leder.

 

Finally I can show you my finished beaded rosette. I never made one that big before: 7.5 cm in diameter, 11/0 seedbeads, a metal rivet for an easy start, embroidered on Nicole's Bead Backing and backed with soft suede.

Langsam aber sicher/Slowly but steady

....komme ich dem Ziel näher. Die Rosette hat nun schon einen Durchmesser von 7 cm, noch ohne Kante.

 

.... I'm getting closer to the end. The rosette has now a diameter of almost 3 inches, without an edge design.

Umperlte Pfeilspitze/Beadbezeled Arrowhead

Neben den Perlereien und Basteleien ist ja auch allgemein bekannt, dass ich eine leidenschaftliche Bogenschützin bin. Ich versuche immer, meine Handarbeiten, besonders die Perlen, und auch Bogenschießen in meinen Alltag zu integrieren, weil das einfach ich bin und worüber ich mich definiere.

 

You know that, besides being a beader/crafter, I am also a passionate archer and that I try to bring my beadwork, my crafts and also my passion for archery into everyday life. I just got to, as this is what I am and what defines me.

 

 

Hier entsteht gerade meine erste umperlte Pfeilspitze. Schlauchpeyote mit 15/0-Rocailles. Ich habe ein Stück Wildleder um die Pfeilspitze geklebt, damit der Peyoteschlauch nicht verrutscht und ohne weiteres Kleben hält. Unten seht ihr dann den fertigen Anhänger an einer Schlangenkette. Perfekter Bogenschützen-Schmuck!

 

So here's a pic of the WIP on my first beadbezeled arrowhead. Tubular peyote with 15/0 seedbeads. You can see that I glued a piece of suede onto the arrowhead to make the peyote tube stay in place without any further glueing. Below you can see the finished pendant on a snakechain. Perfect archery jewelry! 

 



 

Weihnachten ist ja noch weit weg, aber ich denke schon an Weihnachtsgeschenke. Handgemacht braucht halt Zeit. Und diese Pfeilspitzen (als Ketten- oder Schlüsselanhänger) wären perfekte Geschenke für meine Bogentrainer.

 

Christmas is still some months away, but I already think about what to make as Christmas gifts. Handmade takes some time. And I really think, that beadbezeled arrowheads (pendants or keychains) would make nice gifts for my fellow archery instructors.

Neuer Lederbeutel/New Suede Pouch

Endlich ist mein neuer Wildlederbeutel fertig und ich brauche meine Müsliriegel und sonstigen Dopingmittel beim Bogenschießen nicht mehr in allen möglichen Taschen verstauen (und suchen).

Die Perlenrosette symbolisiert die vier Himmelsrichtungen und diesmal habe ich sie in blau gestickt. Für meinen Rückenköcher habe ich sie damals in den klassischen Farben gestickt, aber diesmal hatte ich Lust auf eine moderne Interpretation. Dazu habe ich auch noch passende Perlenhülsen für die Enden der Lederkordel gemacht und ein paar passende Crowbeads haben sich auch noch gefunden.

Finally my new suede pouch is ready and I don't have to carry my cereal bars around in my pockets (and steadily search for them) while archery practice.

The beaded rosette symbolizes the four directions and I chose several shades of blue this time. For my back quiver I made these rosette in the classic colors, but this time I wanted a modern interpretation. I also made a pair of matching beaded beads for the leather cord ends and I also found some matching crowbeads in my stash.

31.Dezember: Mehr Perlerei/More beading

Ein weitere Seaglass-Anhänger, diesmal in blau. Der gefällt mir bis jetzt am besten, aber ich muss nochmal an der Öse rumbasteln, denn der Anhänger verdreht sich immer und das ist nicht so toll.

Another seaglass pendant, this time in blue. I like this one best so far, but I have to modify the loop a bit, as the pendant sometimes turns itself around and that isn't nice.

Mehr Perlerei/More Beading

Noch ein Anhängerchen mit einem Stück Seaglass aus England. Ich habe wieder Alufolie dahintergeklebt, damit das Licht reflektiert wird. Rote und weiße Perlen bilden den Rahmen für das Glas. Mir gefällt besonders gut, wie der rote Faden durch die klaren Perlen am Rand scheint.

Another pendant I made from a piece of English seaglass. I glued foil to the back to make the pendant reflect the light through the glass. I bezeled the glass with red and white beads. I especially like how the red thread shines through clear edge beads.
