Paint Party Friday: Lioness

Today I'll share with you my variations on a drawing I did back in 2011 during the 52 weeks of Drawing Lab 2011. I had lots of fun back then with learning to draw, trying out different techniques etc. (BTW, Miss Jeannie, I miss you!) So here's the lioness I drew back then. Isn't she majestic? Like Mama Africa.

Then a quote from the song "Read all about it" by Emeli Sandé came to my mind.

The drawing, yes, I like it, but the lettering..........nope! So back to practice some handlettering.

Much better, isn't it? Love the fake calligraphy effect on the writing. Also pulled out my crayons to give it some color. But now I'm missing my fixative spray. Got lost somwhere in my workshop.

Here's another version of the lioness with my pencil ink brush/pocket brush, which I found while searching for art materials. Also added a bit of color to this, but it doesn't show really well in the photo.

Kokopelli Design 2012

So, nachdem ich auf anderen Blogs viel darüber gelesen habe, was meine Bloggerfreunde so im nächsten Jahr planen, muss ich doch auch mal was zu diesem Thema schreiben.

So what do I plan for next year? I read a lot of posts by my blogging friends all around the world and thought I'd share my plans for 2012, too.

First there is Echo Creative Club, hosted by my dear friend Jeannie of Jewelry by Jeannie. Echo Creative Club is a monthly challenge with changing participants and featuring Jeannie's oh so beautiful art beads. Click the link and see what's behind and how to participate.

Second is the transformation of Drawing Lab 2011 in Drawing Lab 2012. I had so much fun drawing every week, fulfilling a certain assignment and uploading my work to a Flickr group for all to see. I'm going to continue my weekly drawing routine to increase my skills and learn more about drawing techniques. I'll post my work every Monday in the category called "Montagsmaler" (translation: "Monday Painters", which was once a famous gameshow in Germany).

Third is a new series of of color challenges by Marcie of La Bella Joya. Remember the Margie & Me Challenges of last year? When you loved them, then you will freak out about the new one called Fashion Inspiration Blog Hop.

And then there are the one or two things I want to achieve for myself: increase my sewing skills with the help of my talented Mom and learn from her how to sew clothes plus I want to make more things for myself instead of thinking what might sell and what other people might like. I'm looking forward to a creative and fun year and hope to see you often in bloggerland!

1. Januar: Christbaum-Zeichnung/Christmas Tree Drawing

Frohes Neues Jahr!

Happy New Year!

This is my last assignment from Drawing Lab 2011. It was a lot of fun and I will redo some of the assignments this year, just to stay in in "drawing mood" and see how my skill developped. I plan to do at least one drawing every week. So let's see if I can do that. :-)

27. Dezember: Souvenir aus London/Souvenir from London

Die Brücke/The Bridge

No, not the movie, but a new drawing from the last students' choice assignment of Drawing Lab 2011. I can't believe it's almost over!

This is the biggest bridge of my hometown. It will be replaced by a new one built of cement and wouldn't look as half as nice than the old one. :-( I drew it with charcoal pencil and used fixative spray to make the charcoal lines durable.

Drawing Lab 2011: Landschaften/Landscapes

Landscapes are often painted and I liked doing them back in school. As long as I didn't have to draw people (which I couldn't). But when there were a landscape assignment in Drawing Lab last week, I was lost. But I'll show you three landscape paintings, I really like.

These are from Linda. She used chalk pastels and drew the local orange groves with the badlands as a backdrop. I love the colors in these.

And then there is the watercolor painting by Kat, which I like so much that I'd hang it on my wall immediately. She painted the Northwoods of Wisconsin.

And finally that is my drawing: the view from my office.

Insekten: fasziniernd oder eklig?/Insects: fascinating or ugly?

One of the last Drawing Lab assignments was drawing insects. I got lots of feedback on my stag beetle drawing, reaching from "Awesome beetle!" to "Really ugly!", and my question to you is now: What do you think about insects?
Do you like only the "beautiful ones" like dragonflies or butterflies? Or also the ugly ones like spiders or the ones who sting like bees and mosquitoes (ok, I think no one really likes mosquitoes).
I'd love to hear from you and your insect likes and dislikes.

Wochenende in München/Weekend in Munich

Last week I was in Munich at the "Wies'n" and when I came back I used some of my impressions for this week's Drawing Lab Students' Choice.
One of the famous spots in Munich is the Bavaria statue standing in front of the Bavarian Hall of Fame and looking over the Oktoberfest site called "Theresienwiese". First I did a raw sketch of the statue and then did a second, more detailed drawing. I like how she turned out, although I still have difficulties to draw human shapes.

The second drawing shows a front door in a quarter of Munich where some friends and me had brunch on the last day of my trip.

One of the latest assignments was drawing a Mandala and I also chose this topic for one of my students' choice assignments. It was like meditation drawing it and the colors really please my eyes. So happy! This mandala is drawn on white cardboard with copy markers.

Zentangle

"Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity."

During my participation in Drawing Lab 2011 I stumbled upon the first zentangles, which seem to be a big hit lately, especially in the US. For me they looked like the things I draw while being on the phone or in a boring business meeting. But that there is a whole "zentangle movement" was new to me. I especially like that there is only one color: black. Due to that the tools are very limited and the focus shifted to you own creativity. Another point is that I find it very relaxing to draw a zentangle, almost like meditation. On Zentangle.com are lots of infos listed and the description of zentangles really hits the nail on the head:

"Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form that is fun and relaxing. It increases focus and creativity."

So what was up in Drawing Lab last week? I went back all the way to lesson 1 and drew some cats. Big cats. Lions. I used some photos for inspiration and drew a female and a male lion.

She looks like the Queen of Africa.

And I think he is more a Clarence type of lion.

Asien/Asia

Seems like I'm drawn to Asian designs and faces lately. The Asian journey began with a drawing of a dragon and went on with the reproduction of one of the most famous portraits of Steve McCurry.

For the Mandala session for week 29 I drew this Yin and Yang Mandala in black and white. It's not a classic mandala, but I have to say I like the idea.

Next one is this colored drawing of a little Buddhist monk. Isn't he cute?

I enjoyed drawing thsi portrait of a Geisha so much. I think the most fun was drawing her face with the heavy makeup. And I so love the look on her face, which makes me laugh.

Ein Foto..../A photo....

....that I'm admiring for years now. The photo was taken by Steve McCurry in 1985 and most of you might know it from the cover of National Geographic. It shows a young Afghan woman in a refugee camp in Pakistan. I chose the pic to pratice a bit of portrait drawing. Aren't her eyes amazing?

Art Show Blog Hop

Yes, I am still here, beading, drawing, sewing, knitting! But life got into my way or let's better say a new job. And this lead to limited blogging time. So I'm a bit late on posting the Art Show Blog Hop for Drawing Lab 2011, but.........I'm the only one in this blog hop, so it doesn't matter. I don't know where my fellow drawing students are.

So here are my favorite drawings from the last three months. First a drawing of a Thor's hammer pendant I have. Good for practice shading.

Second a drawing of an eagle head pendant, carved from bone. It was amazing how I was able to draw all the details in the feathers, simply by practicing every week.

I didn't draw a horse in ages. I did back when I was in school. And I'm still drawn to the elegance and beauty of horses, although they're no longer around me every day.

And here are two fantasy creatures. The dragon was a student's choice right after we had to draw fantasy creatures and the centaur I drew for this certain assignment. The Chinese letter menas dragon (as far as I know). I especially love the shading of the wings.

In the centaur drawing I especially like how I was able to draw human features and add them to an animal body and both look good together. The lessons during the three months, especially the drawings of hands and faces, were perfect for pratising my weak spot: humans.

Drawing Lab 2011: Woche 19/Week 19

This week was students' choice and I decided to practice a bit on my shading, as this seems to be the thing I should do. I like drawing with pencil more than any other technique and feel like a good shading might help to make the drawings come alive. The first object I chose was a carved eagle head pendant made from bone. The feathers gave me enough possibilities to try shading techniques. I added the original within the second photo for comparison.

Drawing Lab 2011: Woche 18/Week 18

I bet almost all of you already scribbled senseless circles and lines on a piece of paper while on the phone or in a boring business meeting.

I did. But did you ever try to see something in those lines? So that was this week's assignment.

Walking away from conscious drawing and into the imaginative and inconscious world of our mind. A fun journey, but not always easy.

Drawing Lab 2011: Woche 17/Week 17

Was bedeutet Freiheit für euch?

This week was about creating art journal pages. I never created one before, so I was curious where this assignment would take me. I fell in love with some colored paper in my stash and had this idea of creating a page about the fragility of freedom. Without freedom we are like birds without wings. What does freedom mean for you?

Drawing Lab 2011: Woche 16/Week 16

I don't know if I had fun with this exercise, but it was interesting for sure. We should observe and then sketch an object between 20 and 100 times. I overread a sentence in the instructions and you can read about my mistake here. I enjoyed this mistake. Yeah, really, as it led to a great post. Then I chose to take a paperclip and draw that relatively simple object. Here are several of my sketches. I believe that one gets dizzy observing a paperclip for too long.

Die Berliner Luftbrücke/The Berlin Airlift

This post was born from a mistake I made during the last assignment of Drawing Lab 2011. The first object I chose for the Sketch X Twenty assignment was the Berlin Airlift Memorial, designed by Eduard Ludwig (1906-1960), until I read that it is a must to see the object life. OK……I’ve seen one of those monuments “in person” some years back in time, but I’m not living close to any of them to go and have my drawing session there.
In June 1948 the Soviet Union started a blockade of West Berlin, cutting down all supplies for the city down to zero. Which means no food, no electricity and no heating for 2.2 million people in the Western sectors of Berlin. Berlin was still badly destroyed by the bombings of WW II and people living there were completely depending on supplies coming to the city from West Germany by airplane, train or truck. But how to deliver food and electricity for 2.2 million people including the soldiers of the Western Allies if only the sky is open? What a huge challenge! But gladly there were General Lucius D. Clay, military governor for the US sector, and General William H. Tunner who already gained airlift experience in an operation called “The Hump” during the Japanese invasion in China.
During 463 days, from June 24th 1948 to August 27th 1949, Western Berlin was kept alive by 277.569 flights, operated by the USAF and the RAF, bringing a load of 2,325,509.6 tons of supplies to West Berlin, including coal, food, construction materials etc. The peak was reached on April 15/16 1949, when there were 1,398 flights and 12,849 tons of freight within 24 hours. That means one plane each minute landing in the city. Can you believe that all the materials for building a whole powerplant were brought into the city by airplane? Incredible! But the airlift wasn’t only the pilots and airplanes. Overall 60,000 people worked 24/7 to guarantee a smooth operation process.
The sad part of this story is that 39 British, 31 Americans and 13 Germans lost their lives in accidents happening during the airlift. Their names are written in the base of the Airlift Monuments, so we will remember them forever.
The Berlin Airlift wasn’t only a huge challenge, but also the guarantee for a free West Berlin and the basis for the German reunion 40 years later, in 1989. If you’re interested in further information, click this

Drawing Lab 2011: Woche 15/Week 15

This week was about drawing our own hand. I was in the right mood and drew three hands plus my own version of Albrecht Dürer's "Praying Hands" (shown above).

What surprised me the most was the fact that I was able to shade all the hands very good and give them depth and make them appear 3D. Is this the first effect of this class meaning I learnt something and was able to increase my drawing skills a bit?

A fellow Drawing Lab student made me laugh so hard. Linda went Trekkie with her hand drawing. My own idea was much less creative with drawing the "V" sign. You can see all the drawings of week 15 on the Drawing Lab 2011 Flickr site.
