Bogen-Kurse: Woche 4/Archery Classes: Week 4

This time I told my students a bit about the different contests in archery. The list is not necessarily complete, but gives a little overview:

- FITA* Outdoor: There are two outdoor contests: one is the so called "Big FITA", where 144 arrows are shot, 36 arrows on each distance. For men the targets are on 90, 70, 50 and 30m and for the ladies on 70, 60, 50 and 30m. The second contest is the "Championship System", where 72 arrows are shot on a target, that is 70m away. For kids the targets are bigger or the distances shorter.

- FITA Indoor: Here the distance is 18m and 60 arrows are shot.

- FITA Field: This contest is shot in the field/woods. Three arrows on each target. In the first round the distances are known, in the second round they are unknown. The important thing in this contest is to estimate the distances correctly.

- Bowhunter and 3D tournaments: There are a lot of contests like this and the rules differ from organizer to organizer. Often the normal targets are replaced by animal targets or 3D foam animals.

- Ski Arc: Similar to biathlon this is a combination of cross-country skiing and archery.

- Flight Contests: This contest is all about shooting the longest distance.

FITA (Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc) is the international umbrella organisation of archers (do you really say "umbrella organisation"?), based in Lausanne (Switzerland).

  1. The flight contests sound like fun. What is the maximum distance an arrow can fly from a modern bow?

  2. Pearl, somehow your comment vanished, although I published it. The net is sometimes weird. Here is a link to the world record list of flight archery and it seems that the world record for hand-drawn bows is about 1.222m: http://www.usaarcheryrecords.org/FlightPages/2009/2009%20World%20Regular%20Flight%20Records.pdf
That's an amazing distance, isn't it?

  4. Now when you say "animal targets" Real ones? HA! I hope not, I would have to call PETA on you.
This this make me want to try archery for the fun of it.
How heavy is a bow and do you have to be really strong to pull back on it?

  5. Nope, no real animals were injured. :-) Plus bow hunting and bow fishing is illegal in Germany.
A bow weighs from 500 grams to 2 or 3 kilos, depending on the type and the equipment attached, e.g. sights, stabilizers etc. And no, you don't have to be strong, as the bow can (and has to) be adjusted to each archer individually. We have 8 year old kids in the club, shooting small and light bows, so strength is not the point.
