I came across a fun challenge on my Twitter account this week: Draw a circle around a 2 euro coin and only draw inside the circle. The coin has a diameter of 1"/2.5 cm. It was a fun challenge and I drew three miniature night scenes. First I used a fine ink pen and then added some color with my watercolor pencils.
I did another night scene with a bit more planning. I googled watercolor night scenes, that were made with masking markers. Masking markers are used for blocking out color from some areas in a painting to get for example a bright white moon and stars. I found many ideas, but this one was my favorite. On our evening walks we hear and seee a lot of owls lately (mostly tawny owls) and DH and I both love them. The owls must have had a good year, as there are many young owls around. So I did a quick sketch of my idea.
Since I wanted to add some color, I did a test piece with my watercolor pencils and ink pen.
And the final version with masking markers, watercolors and ink pen. The masking marker rubbed off easily on the stars, but not on the moon. Left the paper scratched and "fluffy". But I love the effect and will definitely experiment with these markers in the future. I really love this scene, looks so peaceful!
Sharing these night scenes with Thursday Art Date! Come and join us! It's fun!
Love those little coin scenes, great idea. And the owl piece is fantastic. I have problems with those markers, the stuff never rubs off well. Lucky you seeing owls. I hear one every evening, but never get to see it. Have a happy day! Valerie
AntwortenLöschenI'll give those markers another try. I think small areas are no problem, but in bigger ones it sticks to the paper too much. We had so much luck with actually SEEING the owls. DH spotted one, because it moved and I heard one calling in a tree so close. And then we saw its silhouette against the night sky.
LöschenThose 1" coins are superb. I especially like the man in the boat.
AntwortenLöschenI've never heard of those markers before, but I like the effect you got around the moon, because it looked like it was behind a cloud. That owl is totally incredible. Awesome, too. I really, really love it a lot!
Thank you! Never heard of them before, too. Came across them on a website for art materials and gave them a try. The paper came out fuzzy after rubbing off the marker and I decided to add some grey with lots of water. Came out pretty cool, right?
LöschenHow cute are the little coin pictures and the owl picture is so beautifully painted.
AntwortenLöschenGreetings Elke
Thank you, Elke! :)
LöschenLove your night scenes. That coin idea is brilliant I should try that for inspiration.
AntwortenLöschenOh yes, please! Would love to see your versions.
LöschenThe small paintings are delightful but I really like the owl scene. I was thinking about drawing an owl but in recent years I did that so did something different this time. I like both outcomes but maybe preferred the markers a little more. Stay safe and be well. Have a doodletastic day!
AntwortenLöschenCurious as a Cathy
Thank you, Cathy! Stay safe, too. :)
LöschenYour coin art is lovely. Enjoyed your other sketches as well. Happy Thursday
AntwortenLöschenMuch💝love
Thanks, Gillena! Appreciated!
LöschenOhhhh what a cleaver idea. You got so much detail in those little circles. I love your owl night scene. So glad you joined in.
AntwortenLöschenThanks, Nicole! I love that I found another art blog hop.
LöschenI love the silhouette in all three pictures and the little coin pictures are awesome. At first when I saw them I thought they were little plates. It can't be easy to draw on such a small area. As for owls ... you are so lucky to see and hear them near you. We have a great horned owl family that lives near by and we here them now and then and one night I saw one perched on my neighbors chimney. I love raptors and have worked with them at a nature center ... they are such an important part of our eco-system and on top of that they are magnificent and beautiful. I am happy for you that you get to share your world with them. Hope you are staying safe and just a side note ... my significant other is DH too so we have that in common :)

The coins were fun to work on and it all depends on a very fine ink pen. But it was challenging! I'm always happy, when I see a wild owl or another bird of prey. Such magical creatures! We can also see them at different zoos or nature centers. Stay safe, too, and good to know you have a DH, too. :)
LöschenHi Kokopelli :) Your coin art is really nice! That's some really nice detail! I love your night scene painting! Oh, I want masking markers! I have masking fluid and I paint it on with a paintbrush, but it's hard to get detail with the brush. I bought a "rubber cement pickup eraser" at the art store, the lady there told me it works really well to pick up all of the masking fluid and so far it's worked well as long as I don't rub too hard, I don't ruin my paper. I'm going to look into getting a masking marker! Lovely post and thanks for the information!! :) We don't hear too many owls around here, but once in a while it's really cool to hear them hooting! :)
AntwortenLöschenOh, the rubber cement eraser is an idea. I have one in a box of graphite pens and will try that next time. I was indifferent, which masking fluid to buy, in pens or as a fluid. The pens were definitely a good decision. Enjoy creating, Rain, and thanks for hosting TAD! :)
