Paint Party Friday: The Barn Owl and MiniMal Tutorials by Doro Kaiser

 Hello lovely people and welcome to Paint Party Friday on my blog. Lots of things to share again. Painting and drawing are the things, that keep me sane during the last weeks (together with knitting squares for my sock yarn blanket).

First thing to share is my barn owl. It started out last week as a "10 minute art warm-up" and I thought it would look good in watercolors. So here the first test painting with background and the first layer of color. This is a new experience for me, as I usually finish my drawings in one session.

And here it is all finished. I added two more layers of color and some details with an ink pen. I'm still not good enough to add those details with a paintbrush, but love the effect of the ink pen. This looks a lot lighter than the first photo, as I photographed this one in bright daylight. I have another version of this owl started on thicker watercolor paper. Love how it turned out, but there's a long way to go.

Later this week I came across another fun page with mini painting tutorials for all kinds of flowers and fruit. Since I didn't have my watercolors on hand, I chose to give them a try with my PITT brush pens. The mini tutorials by Doro Kaiser can be found following the link above (the description is in German, but the photos are self-explaining).

And too good not to share here again (after I already shared with Rain's Thursday Art Date) is a challenge I came across this week, too. Draw a circle around a coin ( in the original challenge it was a 2 euro coin with 1"/2.5 cm diameter) and then draw something inside the circle. And only inside the circle. There were so many funny pieces and you can find them under #ichgebeauf. I did three little night scenes and added a bit of color with my watercolor pencils. Love how they turned out!

Tag Tuesday: A Robin's Story

Little robin built her nest and filled it with little blue eggs. She keeps them warm day and night. But what's that? A foreign feather? Is someone sneaking around the nest of little robin?

Paint Party Friday: Huginn and Muninn

In my area you can see a lot of ravens and crows and the population grew over the last decade, so they really became a plague in some spots. But nevertheless I love those clever birds with their shiny black feathers(as long they leave the smaller birds and their nests alone). So it was time for me to extend my collection of animal drawings and draw a raven, a Common Raven (Corvus corax) to be precise. I used my Faber CAstell PITT ink pens and a black colored pencil, as I had no carbon pencil or drawing charcoal on hand. So here's the original drawing.

I usually copy and scan my original to make sure I have a copy, if the original gets lost. I took a print and added a passage from the Grímnismál, a song in the Poetic Edda, where Odin speaks of his ravens Huginn (thought) and Muninn (memory).

I'm als a big fan of the art of Sue Coleman and am fascinated by her combination of real life animals with the art and the totems of Northwestern Native American tribes. I always wanted to try something similar, so I took my raven and added a mirror image of it with some old Norse designs and scrolls. Still a lot of work, until I'm really pleased with my work, but it is a beginning. I think I'd love to make something like that with a wolf I drew in 2017.

Nachdem ich gestern in einer meiner FB-Gartengruppen mehr Ideen bekommen habe, ist hier der zweite Durchgang.

Frühlingsanhänger/Spring Tags

Heute hatte ich ein ganz plötzliches Verlangen nach Frühling und nach einem kleinen, schnell zu zeichnenden Motiv. Hier sind also meine Frühlingsanhänger. Ich denke, ich werde sie noch colorieren. Und vielleicht falle mir noch zwei weitere Motive für die leeren Anhänger ein.

Today I felt the urgent need for spring and something small and quick-to-draw. So here are my spring gift tags. I think of coloring them. And maybe I can think of two more motifs for the empty tags.

Paint Party Friday: Vögel/Birds

So happy that I'm back with Eva and Kristin for Paint Part Friday and with the wonderful artists there. Here are some birds I drew in August: an owl and a kestrel.

 

 I always enjoyed drawing and some of the pieces, especailly animals, find their way into my leatherwork.

Ein neuer Anfang.../New beginning...

Eine Freundin hat mich vor kurzem dazu inspiriert, wieder mit dem Zeichnen anzufangen. Erst wollte ich mit einfachen Übungen anfangen, aber das wurde irgendwie langweilig, also direkt rein ins Vergnügen mit einigen Tierportraits.

A friend recently inspired me to get back into drawing. I started with some simple exercises, but that got boring very soon, so I made some animal portraits.

Montagsmaler: Noch 'ne Eule/Another Owl

Noch ein Geschenk, diesmal von einem Kollegen, hat mich zu diesem Kunstwerk veranlasst. Und zwar farbiges Zeichenpapier, auf dem ich mal ausprobieren sollte, wie sich ein farbiger Hintergrund auf eine Zeichnung auswirkt. Eule, hellbraunes Büttenpapier, Kohle, Pastellstifte, 43 x 53 cm.

Another gift, this time from a coworker, inspired me to this piece of art. The gift were some sheets of colored drawing paper and he wanted me to try and see how a colored background influences a drawing. Owl, lightbrown paper, charcoal, pastel pencils, 43 x 53 cm.

Montagsmaler: Eulen/Owls

Es ist Montag und deshalb Zeit, einige Zeichnungen vom Wochenende zu zeigen. ich suche gerade nach einer Eule, die ich auf einer Messerscheide anbringen kann, die bei einem gekauften Messer dabei war. Die braucht noch eine persönliche Note. Immer noch einfacher als eine neue zu nähen.

It's Monday and it's time to show some drawings I made yesterday. I'm looking for an owl fitting a knife sheath. It's a bought one that came with a knife and I'd like to add a personal touch to it instead of sewing a new one.

Ich liebe Raubvögel (ach was, wirklich?), aber Adler habe ich nun mal genug in meinen Lederarbeiten verwendet. Also warum nicht mal eine Eule. Oder auch mehrere.

I love birds of prey (oh really?) and had used enough eagles in my leatherwork, so why not do an owl. Or some more owls.

Paint Party Friday: Conche

Ich habe noch ein Muschel gezeichnet, diesmal eine Conche. Ich habe eine riesige Conche bei mir zu Hause, die mir meine Eltern von einer Karibikreise mitgebracht haben. Ich habe sie grob mit Bleistift vorgezeichnet und dann mit Pastellstiften coloriert. Die Pastellstifte sind perfekt für die sanften Farben der Muschel.

I drew another shell, this time a Conche. I have a huge one which my parents brought me years ago from a trip to the Carribean. I sketched it roughly with pencil and then colored it with pastel pencils which are perfect for the soft colors in the shell.

Montagsmaler: Langeweile ;-)/Boredom ;-)

Ich habe auf meinen Unterlagen eine lustige kleine Zeichnung gefunden, die ich mit euch teilen wollte. Die Sitzung scheint ein wenig langweilig gewesen zu sein, deshalb könnt ihr nun eine ganze Fensterbank mit Kakteen inklusive Gießkanne bewundern. Sind die nicht süß?

I found a cute little sketch on my meeting notes, that I wainted to share with you. The meeting must have been a bit boring, so that’s why you can adore a whole windowsill full of potted cacti(or is cactuses the right word?) plus watering can. Aren’t they cute?

Montagsmaler 15: St.-Basilius-Kathedrale/St. Basil's Cathedral

Die St.-Basilius-Kathedrale in Moskau: farbig und mit Gold aufgehübscht (ich hoffe, man sieht es auf dem Foto). Eine wunderschöne Kirche!

Montagsmaler 14: Am Teich/At the pond

Wenn ihr einen Teich habt, dann wisst ihr, dass da so einiges los sein kann. Vor allem im Frühling, wenn alles wieder zum Leben erwacht. Hier sind meine Zeichnungen für diesen Montag. Ein Graureiher, mit Filzstift und Pastellstiften gezeichnet. Es gibt hier sehr viele und es sind wirklich wunderschöne Vögel.

If you got a pond, then you know that there are lots of things to see, especially in spring when all things come to life again. Here are my drawings for this Monday. A grey heron, with marker and pastel pencils. We got lots of them around here and they are so beautiful.

Montagsmaler 13: Pavillon

Heute war ich in der schönen Landeshauptstadt und habe diesen Pavillon nahe des Neuen Schlosses skizziert. Oft setzen sich Musiker dort hinein und musizieren für die Passanten.

I was in our beautiful state capital today and sketched this pavillon in a park near the new castle. It's all made from iron and there are often musicians sitting inside and play for the people walking by.

Montagsmaler Nr. 12: Calla

Eine Papierserviette hat mich zu dieser Calla inspiriert, gezeichnet mit Bleistift und Pastellstiften. Der Frühling bringt immer neue Blumen zum Zeichnen. :-)

A paper napkin inspired me to draw this calla, with pencil and pastel pencils. I love drawing flowers in spring. :-)

Montagsmaler Nr. 11: Pop Art Nofretete

Einen schönen PPF euch allen!

Happy PPF everyone!

Vor drei Wochen bin ich in einem Reiseführer über ein Foto der Nofretete-Büste gestolpert und habe eine Skizze von ihr angefertigt. Die Farben der Büste haben mich so fasziniert, dass ich gleich noch eine detaillierte Zeichnung gemacht habe. Allerdings habe ich mit meinen Farbstiften nicht so ganz die Farben der Büste getroffen, so dass meine Nofretete ein bisschen nach ,,Pop Art" aussieht. Sie trägt jetzt auch einen Ohrring und leuchtenden Lippenstift, aber ich habe ihr linkes Auge blind gelassen, damit sie unverwechselbar bleibt.

Three weeks ago I stumbled upon a photo of the bust of Nofretete and made a quick sketch of it. The colors intrigued me so much, that I made another drawing, but it happened that my colored pencils I used to color the final drawing weren't the "correct" colors like they appear in the bust. So my Nofretete is kind of "pop art" with bright colors. I added an earring and bright lipstick, but left her left eye blind as an umistakable characteristic.

Montagsmaler Nr. 10: Blumen/Flowers

Stiefmütterchen-Geschenkanhänger/Pansy Gift Tag

Letzte Woche war ich nochmal im Schnee in den österreichischen Bergen und habe mir viele Inspirationen geholt. Nur haben die meine Zeichenbemühungen in eine völlig andere Richtung gelenkt als gedacht. Seitdem zeichne ich nur noch Blumen: Rosen, Sonnenblumen, Stiefmütterchen, Tulpen, Bienen, Schmetterlinge. Ich glaube, ich bin reif für den Frühling!

Last week I was out for a snow holiday in Austria and got so many inspirations for drawing. But those inspirations didn’t produce the outcome I thought. Instead I drew flowers all weekend: roses, sunflowers, pansies, tulips, bees, butterflies. I think I’m ready for spring now!

Montagsmaler Nr. 9: Sonne und Mond/Sun and Moon

Inspiriert von den süßen Illustrationen von Diana Evans. Ich habe mir ein 24er-Set Pastellstifte gekauft und das ist das erste Werk damit: Tusche und Pastellstifte.

Inspired by the lovely illustrations of Diana Evans. I gifted myself with a set of 24 pastel pencils and that is my first drawing: ink colored with pastels.
