Ofenhandschuhe XXL/Oven Mitts XXL

Meine Eltern wollten gerne neue Ofenhandschuhe haben, also habe ich versprochen, welche zu nähen. Beim Nähen des Prototypen stellte sich heraus, dass das Ding zu eng ist und das, obwohl ich an der Hand/am Arm meines Papas Maß genommen hatte (von der kompliziert geschriebenen Anleitung und dem völlig unnötigen Herumgepfriemele mit Schrägband mal ganz zu schweigen). Nach dem Prototypen war dann erstmal die Luft raus. Wenigstens passt er mir. ;)

My parents requested a new pair of oven mitts, so I promised to sew them some. After sewing up a prototype, it turned out that it was way too tight around Dad's arm (not to mention the more than complicated pattern and the absolute needless use of bias tape in it). After finishing the prototype my desire to make an adjusted air was completely gone. At least the prototype fits me. ;)

Aber dann bin ich über die wunderbare Anleitung von Westfalenstoffe getolpert und habe danach XXL-Ofenhandschuhe für den Herrn mit den Popeye-Unterarmen (aka Papa) genäht. Und weil ich ja ein Fan von Jeans-Recycling bin (regelmäßige Leser wissen das), besteht der Außenstoff komplett aus wiederverwendeten Hosen. Gefüttert habe ich sie mit Baumwollstoff.

But then I came across the fantastic tutorial by Westfalenstoffe and made a pair of XXL oven mitts for the gentleman with the Popeye forearms (aka Dad). And since I'm a fan of denim recycling (regular readers know about that fact), I made the outside completely out of recycled jeans. The mitts are lined with cotton fabric.

Eine kleine Bestellung fertig gemacht. Die Freundin meiner Nicht möchte unbedingt auch so eine Jeanstasche haben, wie ich sie für meine Nichte vor einigen Jahren gemacht habe. Kein Problem! Man hat ja eine ,,kleine" Auswahl an abgelegten Jeans vorrätig. Bärchen, handgewebtes Band, und Knopf dran und schon ist das Einzelstück fertig.

A little order fulfilled. My niece's friend asked for a jeans bag for her birthday, the same kind I made for my niece years ago. No problem, as I have quite a collection of worn out jeans at home. Little bear, handwoven ribbon and a button were also in my stash.

Neuer Jeans-Quilt/Another Jeans Quilt

Mir gefällt der Denim Rag Quilt von Patchwork-and-Quilting.com so gut, daß ich nun schon den zweiten genäht habe. Dieser hier wird ein Geschenk für meine Bruder und meine Schwägerin, aber pssssssssst! Ich hoffe, er gefällt ihnen.

I like the pattern of the Denim Rag Quilt by Patchwork-and-Quilting.com so much that I made a second one. This will become a gift for my brother and my SIL, but sssshhhhhhht! I hope they like it.

Ich habe den Quilt gestern fertiggestellt, indem ich ihn gewaschen und durch den Trockner gejagt habe, damit die Nahtzugaben auch schön ausfransen. Ich habe ihn bisher nur einmal gewaschen, da das Ausfransen mit der Zeit und durch den Gebrauch sowieso kommt. Er ist also sozusagen nie fertig. Obwohl ich den Quilt nun schon zum zweiten Mal nähe, ist es trotzdem noch viel Arbeit und ich empfehle hierfür auf jeden Fall zwei Werkzeuge, die wenn auch nicht notwendig, aber doch sehr nützlich sind. Das erste ist natürlich mein ,,Arbeitspferd", eine Pfaff-Nähmaschine, die ich von meiner Mutter ,,geerbt" habe, als sie sich eine neue gekauft hat. Wenn ihr über die Anschaffung einer Nähmaschine nachdenkt, dann zieht auf jeden Fall die Anschaffung einer Markenmaschine in Betracht und nicht irgendeines Billig-Glumps. Das ist gut investiertes Geld.

I finished the quilt yesterday by washing and drying it to make the seam allowances fray. I only washed it once so far, as the fraying will come with time and use. So this is still a work in progress. Although I made the pattern twice it is still much work and I recommend two tools that are neccessary for that or at least very, very useful. First is my "workhorse", a Pfaff sewing machine, which I "heired" from my Mom, when she bought herself a new one. When you think about buying a sewing machine, seriously consider a branded one and not a cheapo. That money is well invested.

Das zweite nützliche Werkzeug ist diese Allzweck-Schere mit Feder, die sich selbsttätig wieder öffnet. Ich habe die nahtzugaben an meinem ersten Quilt mit einer normalen Schere und später mit einem Seitenschneider geschnitten, weil vier Lagen Stoff unglaublich schwer zu schneiden sind. Mit dem Teilchen hier ging es SEHR viel flotter und einfacher. Ich habe die Schere für fünf Euronen in einem Discounter gekauft, Wirklich sehr nützlich!

Second useful tool is those self-opening shears. I made my first denim quilt with scissors and then changed to a flush cutter, because cutting the seam allowances was so hard on the hands. But this thing makes it a LOT easier and faster. I bought mine for five euros at a discounter and use it a lot cutting leather, cardboard, heavy fabrics, wire (yes, wire!) and others. Very useful tool!

Tadaaaaa! Denim Rag Quilt

Ich weiß, daß ich diesen Post schon auf meinem Blogmonster-Blog veröffentlicht habe, aber viele von euch wollten gerne einen Kommentar loswerden, was aber nicht funktioniert hat. Das könnt ihr hier nun gerne nachholen.

So, es ist vollbracht! Mein erster Quilt! Obwohl er sehr einfach war, sowohl vom Muster als auch von der Herstellung, so war’s doch ein Stück harte Arbeit, vor allem das Schneiden der Nahtzugaben für die flauschigen Fransen. Aber mit dem Ergebnis bin ich sehr zufrieden.

Drei abgelegte Jeans und ein Jeanshemd wurden recycelt und in diesem Quilt zu neuem Leben erweckt. Das Muster stammt von Helen Cairns von Patchwork-and-Quilting.com und ich habe es mir schon 2007 ausgedruckt, als es noch ein kostenloses Muster war. Heute kann man es dort leider nur noch käuflich erwerben. Die Rückseite ist aus einem Baumwollstoff mit Spiralmuster von Buttinette. So, ich bin mal auf dem Sofa, mit meinem neuen Quilt kuscheln.

It’s finally done! My first quilt! Although no extraordinary pattern and easy in the making, it still was a good amount of work, especially clipping the seam allowances for the fluffy edges. But I am very happy with the outcome.

Three worn-out jeans and a denim shirt went into this quilt and started a new life. The pattern is from Helen Cairns of Patchwork-and-Quilting.com and I printed it back in 2007 when it was a free pattern. Today you can buy the pattern on Helen’s site. The backing is a cotton fabric with a spiral print from Buttinette (a very well-known firm in Germany selling all kinds of crafting supplies). OK, I’m off now on the sofa, cuddling up with my new quilt.
