Ich mußte heute meine Paula einschläfern lassen. 17 Jahre glückliches Katzenleben sind zu Ende. Was für ein schrecklicher Tag!

I gotta put down my kitty Paula today. 17 years of a happy cat life are over. What a horrible day!

Montagsmaler Nr. 8: Nofretete

Nofretete lebte im 14. Jahrhundert vor Christus und war die Gemahlin Echnatons. Ihre Büste, auf der unser heutiges Bild von ihr beruht, wurde 1912 bei Ausgrabungen in Amarna gefunden. Das Original steht heute im Ägyptischen Museum in Berlin.

Nofretete was living in the 14th century BC and married to Echnaton. When we imagine her today we always have the picture of her bust in mind, that was found in Amarna in 1912. Today the original can be seen in the Egyptian Museum in Berlin.

Echo Creative Club: February 2012

Endlich ist es soweit! Der Echo Creative Club Blog Hop für Februar geht los.

Nachdem ich die bei Jeannie bestellte Gin Blossom bekommen hatte, habe ich erstmal eine Zeichnung gemacht.

After I got the blue Gin Blossom I asked for from Jeannie, I first made a drawing.



Als mir die zündende Idee für dieses Kettendesign kam, habe ich gerade meinen diesjährigen Chainmaille-Kurs gegeben. Ich habe einem Kursteilnehmer Japanese 12-in-2 an einem meiner Armbänder erklärt und zack! Das Blumenmuster passt einfach perfekt zu Jeannies Gin Blossom.

When the idea for necklace design hit me I was teaching my annual chainmaille classes. I was talking to a student about Japanese 12-in-2 and boom! The flower pattern is the perfect match for Jeannie's Gin Blossom.

Und hier ist die gesamte Kette: vier Blümchen auf jeder Seite und damit es hinten angehmer zu tragen ist, ein Stück Double Chain. Natürlich habe ich alle Ringe selbst gewickelt und geschnitten, wie bei (fast) allen meiner Chainmaille-Stücke.

And here's the whole necklace: four flowers on each side and for more comfort two lengths of Double Chain at the ends. Of course I coiled and cut all the jumprings for this piece by hand, like I do for (almost) all my chainmaille pieces.

Paint Party Friday: Katzenmotto/Cat Motto

Am Montag hatte meine Kollegin Geburtstag und da sie sich demnächst eine Katze anschaffen möchte, habe ich für sie dieses Bildchen gezeichnet. Einen Hund hat sie allerdings nicht. ;-)

On Monday was my colleagues birthday. She's thinking about getting herself a cat and so I drew this cat motto for her. And no, she does not have a dog. ;-)

Seestern/Starfish

Nach einem Muster von Scott David Plumlee. Das Problem ist nur, dass das Sternchen seine Form nicht behalten wollte. Marke trauriger Seestern. :-( Was macht man also?

After a pattern by Scott David Plumlee. The problem was that the star wouldn't hold its shape. It looked like a very sad starfish. :-( So what to do?

Richtig! Man ,,ringelt" das gute Stück auf Leder und schon sieht der Anhänger richtig toll aus. Und auf der Haut ist das Leder beinahe unsichtbar. Mein neues Lieblingsstück! Ich glaube, da brauche ich noch einen in kupfer.

Right! Attach it to a piece of leather with some jumprings and the pendant looks fantastic. On the skin the leather is almost invisible. My new fav piece! I think I need one in copper, too.

Na, ist das nicht ein Traum von einem Armband?

Der Weave heißt Camelot und ich dachte, da passen ein paar grüne Perlen und eine Kupferperle mit einem keltischen Muster sehr gut dazu. Ein Geschenk, das Artus seiner Guinevere schenken würde!

The weave is called Camelot and I thought some green beads and a copper bead with a Celtic knot pattern would make the perfect match. A gift Artus would give to Guinevere!

Paint Party Friday: Muscheln vom Lieblingsstrand/Shells from my Favorite Beach

Das heutige Kunstwerk für den PPF is meinem Lieblingsstrand in Italien gewidmet (heute würde ich auch noch Seaglass verwenden, aber damals, als ich das Bild gemalt habe, wusste ich noch nichts davon). Hier also meine Strandkunst mit Muscheln und Schnecken von ,,meinem" Strand, Sand, Glasnuggets und kleinen Spiegelchen.

Bogenschießen bei -21°C/Archery at -21°C

Bogenschießen im Schwarzwald bei -21°C? Verrückte Idee! Aber ich war da am letzten Sonntag. Das Material hat's überlebt, ich auch und im Nachhinein betrachtet war es sehr lustig. Und eiskalt!

Archery in the Black Forest at -21°C (-5.8°F)? Weird idea! But I've done that last Sunday. The equipment survived, me too and looking at it afterwards it was a lot of fun.

Diesen Winter habe ich viele Socken gestrickt und ein Paar ist noch auf den Nadeln. Ich brauchte mal wieder ein paar neue, da einige kaputt gegangen sind.

Paint Party Friday: Fasnet/Carnival

Die Fasnet ist derzeit in vollem Gange. Ich bin ja kein Fasnetsfan und daher auch kein Hästräger, aber die Kostüme einer hiesigen Narrengruppe haben mir so gut gefallen, dass ich sie zeichnen musste. Und für mehr Kunst besucht wie immer Paint Party Friday!


Carnival is in full swing at this time of the year. I'm not a big carnival fan and do not belong to any carnival society, but those costumes of a local carnival society are so nice and colorful I had to draw them. And for more art visit Paint Party Friday!

Hirnverknoten für Fortgeschrittene/Brain Knotting for Advanced Chainmaillers

Jaaaaa, geschafft! Am Anfang dachte ich ja echt, dass mein Hirn mit sovielen Ringen einfach nicht zurechtkommt. Aber man hat ja eine Anleitung und irgendwann ging es dann. Und hier ist meine Version von Turkish Round! Mit Lampworkperle, selbstgebasteltem Verschluss und kleinen Anhängern. Ich habe die Lampworkperle neben dem Verschluss angebracht, da sie durch das Gewicht der Kette oben auf dem Handgelenk bleibt und nicht immer nach unten rutscht.

Falls euch die Kette an Byzantine erinnert, ist das gar nicht so falsch, denn Turkish Round ist eine Art dreiseitiges Byzantine.

Yesssssss, done! In the beginning I thought my brain just can't handle that many rings. But I had good instructions and after some time I got it. And here is my version of Turkish Round! With lampwork bead, handmade clasp and little dangles. I put the lampwork bead besides the clasp, as the bead stays on top of the wrist due to the weight of the chain.

If the weave reminds you of Byzantine, this is correct, as Turkish Round is a kind of triangle Byzantine.

Kupfer: blank oder angelaufen? / Copper: blank or tarnished?

Ein Kollege hat mich gestern gefragt, ob meine Chainmaille-Kupferarmbänder nicht anlaufen würden. Meine Antwort war: Ich hoffe doch! Ich meine, neues glänzendes Kupfer ist schön, aber ich mag meinen Schmuck mit Charakter und Patina. Nicht dass ich mein Kupfer nie putzen würde, was übrigens ganz einfach mit Silberputzmittel oder mit Hausmittelchen geht, z.B. mit Backpulver und Zitronensaft.

A co-worker asked me yesterday if my copper chainmaille bracelets will tarnish. My answer was: I hope so! I mean, new shiny copper is nice, but I like jewelry with character and patina. Not that I never ever clean my copper. You can remove the tarnish very easy with silver polish or with homemade tarnish remover (aka lemon juice and baking soda).

Schaut euch diese Byzantine-Armband hier an: neu oben (vor ca. 3 Jahren) und ein Foto von heute morgen. Das glänzende Armband war schön, aber heute ist es ein Schmuckstück mit Geschichte und mit viel mehr Charakter.

Look at this Byzantine bracelet: new above (taken 3 years ago) and a pic taken this morning. The shiny bracelet was nice, but today it is a piece with istory and got so much more character.

Übrigens war das mein allererstes Chainmaille-Armband, wie man an den mies geschnittenen Ringen erkennen kann. ;-) Und ihr? Fans von blankem Kupfer oder lieber mit Charakter?

By the way that was my very first chainmaille bracelet like you can tell by the ugly cut jumprings. ;-) And what about you? Fans of blank copper or copper with character?

Montagsmaler Nr. 5: Visionen von Ursus maritimus/Visions of Ursus maritimus

Ich liebe Bären, vor allem Eisbären! Deswegen gibt es für den heutigen Montagsmaler-Post ein paar Eisbärstudien. Und wenn ich was mit Bären designen kann, dann aber richtig, so wie z.B. meinen Rückenköcher fürs Bogenschießen oder diese niedlichen Bärenohrringe.

I love bears, especially polar bears! Therefore here are some polar bear studies for this week's Montagsmaler post. And when I can design something with bears, it might look like my back quiver for archery or these cute bear earrings.

Eisbären geraten in ihrem natürlichen Lebensraum immer mehr in Bedrängnis, vor allem wegen der Klimaerwärmung. Ich für meinen Teil hoffe, dass man diese wunderschönen Tiere nicht bald nur noch im Zoo bewundern kann.

Polar bears have serious problems in their natural habitat due to the climatic heating. I hope that these majestic animals can still be seen in nature for a very long time.

Fashion Inspiration Blog Hop: Christian Dior or Sonia Rykiel

Marcie von La Bella Joya hat sich mal wieder ins Zeug gelegt und sich eine Color Challenge für uns ausgedacht (ihr erinnert euch bestimmt noch an ,,Margie & Me"), diesmal als Fashion Inspiration Blog Hop und da mußte ich einfach teilnehmen. Ich bin zwar keine Modemaus, aber ich konnte mir gut vorstellen, was Passendes für die beiden Outfits, die Marcie ausgesucht hat, zu machen. Unten seht ihr die beiden Outfits mit den jeweiligen Farbpaletten.

Marcie over at La Bella Joya thought about a new color challenge like the ones based on Margie Deeb's book "The Beader's Color Palette" which I liked very much. Now she's hosting a Fashion Inspiration Blog Hop and I had to participate. Although I'm not a fashionista I could see myself designing something to go with the outfits Marcie chose. You can see them below with the matching color palette.

Und obwohl mir die leuchtenden Herbstfarben in dem Sonia-Rykiel-Outfit sehr gut gefallen haben, habe ich mir doch Christian Dior ausgesucht. Das Model sieht so romantisch und fast schon elfenhaft aus und ein florales Design wäre perfekt dafür.

And although I liked the bright fall colors in the Sonia Rykiel outfit I chose to go with Christian Dior. The model looks so romantic and almost elvenlike and I thought something floral is perfect to go with that outfit.

Der Designprozess war zwar kurz, aber ich habe ihn nie als so vollständig erlebt wie dieses Mal. Ich hatte dieses schöne dunkellillafarbene Wild-Kunstleder und das war mein Ausgangspunkt: das Design zeichnen, die Blätter filzen, die kleine Blume perlen, einen Knopf aussuchen, alles zusammennähen, von Hand und mit der Maschine.

The design process was short, but never felt so complete before. I got this beautiful dark purple faux suede and went from there: sketching out a design, felting the leaves, beading the little flower, choosing a button, sewing it all together by machine and by hand.

Ich denke, dieses Armband kann man getrost als ,,Mixed Media" bezeichnen. Und er ist soooo angenehm zu tragen!

I think this cuff can really be called "mixed media". And it's soooo comfortable to wear!

Recycling: Nadelkissen/Pincushions

Ich denke, Nadelkissen sind perfekt, um Stoffreste und -restchen loszuwerden. Man kann sie aus Stoffresten nähen und sie mit Stoffresten ausstopfen. Man kann sie sogar mit Resten von Bändern und Litzen dekorieren (wie oben).

I think pincushions are perfect for recycling fabric scraps, aren't they? You can sew them from fabric scraps and stuff them with fabric scraps. You can even use ribbon scraps to decorate them (like the one above).

Und man kann nie genug Nadelkissen auf Vorrat haben, um sie einer nähverrückten Freundin an ein Geschenk zu hängen.

And one can never have enough ready made pincushions to tag them to a gift for a creative friend.
