Einige Sächelchen..../Some thingies....

....die ich euch zeigen muß. Ich habe in letzter Zeit bei einigen Giveaways mitgemacht und hatte ein glückliches Händchen. Und natürlich will ich euch auch die kreativen Köpfe hinter diesen Giveaways nicht vorenthalten. *froi*

Diese hübschen Perlen und den Feder-Anhänger habe ich von der wunderbaren Nicole von Beadwright. Bogenkurse: Woche 3/Archery Classes: Week 3

Diese Woche ging es tatsächlich nur ums Schießen, sozusagen ein ,,Belastungstest" für die Neu-Schützen. Und einigen schmerzen sicher die Arme, aber so ist nun mal der Sport. Ziel war es, nochmal intensiv Fehler zu korrigieren und eine sichere Technik zu entwickeln. Einige haderten mit der Haltung, andere mit dem Visier und manche auch mit dem Bogen. Allerdings konnten einige Schützen auch schon auf kleinere Zielscheiben umsteigen, da sich ihre Technik schon soweit gefestigt hatte. Allerdings ist es nicht nur schwieriger, ein kleineres Ziel zu treffen, sondern es kommt auch eine ,,psychologische" Komponente dazu. Und so war das Schießen auf ein kleineres Ziel doch nicht so einfach, wie es sich manche vorgestellt hatten.....

This week was all about shooting, a test of endurance for the new archers so to say. And some of them have hurting arms for sure, but that's sport. The goal was to intensively correct posture and style and develop a stable technique. Some had problems with their posture, others with the sight and some with the bow. But I'm proud to say that some of my newbies could already change to smaller targets, because their technique was stable enough. But smaller targets are not only more difficult to hit, but there is also a "psychological" component shooting on smaller targets. And so it wasn't that easy as some of my students thought....

Für Erstaunen sorgte dann noch ein gelockerter Nockpunkt*, der fröhlich auf der Sehne hin und her gerutscht ist und den ich wieder festklemmen mußte. Ist mir persönlich noch nie passiert, aber man lernt ja nie aus.

Then there was also some amazement about a loose nocking point*, which wandered happily along the bowstring and had to be crimped close by me. Personally this never happened to me until this day, but one never stops learning.

*Ein Nockpunkt ist ein kleiner Messingring oder eine Wicklung, der/die auf der Sehne über dem Punkt befestigt wird, an dem der Pfeil aufgenockt wird. So stellt man sicher, daß der Pfeil immer an der gleichen Stelle auf der Sehne sitzt. Man kann auch zwei Ringe oder Wicklungen anbringen, um zu vermeiden, daß der Pfeil nach unten wegrutscht.

*A nocking point is a small brass ring or a thread wrapping, which marks the point on the bow string where the arrow is nocked on. So the archer can be sure that the arrow always sits in the same place on the bow string. Sometimes two rings or wrappings are used to keep the arrow from slipping away downwards.

Blümchen-Anhänger/Flowerette Pendant

Etwas kleines, daß ich mit euch teilen möchte. Ich habe vor kurzem bei FMG einige Fotoanhänger bestellt. Ich hatte keine konkreten Pläne mit ihnen, aber dann kam mir diese Idee: eine kleine Kreuzstich-Blume statt eines Fotos würde sicher einen süßen Anhänger abgeben! Ich liebe diesen Anhänger, gerade weil er zwei meiner Lieblingshobbys verbindet: Sticken und Schmuckherstellung. Die Blume ist ziemlich winzig, nämlich nur 1,7 cm x 0,7 cm groß. Jetzt muß ich nur noch eine Kette dafür machen. Und mir überlegen, was ich mit den andere fünf Fotoanhängern anstelle.

A little something I'd like to share with you. I ordered some photo pendant blanks from FMG. I had no exact plans with them, but then I came up with this idea: a cross stitched little flower instead of a photo would make a cute little pendant! I really love how it turned out, because it combines two of my favorite crafting techniques: embroidery and jewelry making. The flower is really tiny and measures only 0.7" x 0.3". Now I only have to make a necklace for it. And come up with ideas for the other five pendant blanks.

Süßigkeiten-Kette/Candy Necklace

Könnt ihr euch noch an die Ketten und Armbänder mit den bunten Brausebonbons erinnern, die man aufessen konnte? Man hat sich zwar immer fast die Zähne dran ausgebissen, aber haben mußte man sie trotzdem. Hier ist eine Kette, die von diesem essbaren Schmuck inspiriert ist. Das Herz hat mir meine Freundin Jeannie zur Verfügung gestellt. Die Kette selbst ist beim Herumspielen mit Ndebele/Herringbone entstanden und den Verschluß habe ich aus einem Bead Swap. Besucht unbedingt auch Jeannies Blog, sagt einen Gruß von mir und schaut euch ihre tollen Kreationen an. Diese Kette werde ich in den nächsten Tagen auch in meinen Artfire-Shop einstellen.

Do you remember those candy bracelets and necklaces, made from stretch cord and candy, that one could eat? I almost broke my teeth, but gotta have them in spite of that. Here is a necklace inspired by the eatable jewelry of my childhood. The heart is from my dear friend Jeannie. The necklace emerged when I played with Ndebele/Herringbone stitch and the clasp is from one of the bead swaps I participated in. Bogenkurs: Woche 2/Archery Classes: Week 2

Diese Woche konnten die Kursteilnehmer verschiedene Bogentypen bewundern, bevor es ans eigentliche Schießen ging. Ich war die ganze Woche und auch schon in der Kursvorbereitung auf der Suche nach den verschiedensten Bögen, damit die Kursteilnehmer sie in der Realität bewundern konnten. Am Ende konnte ich sechs Bogentypen zeigen:

• einen Nachbau des Ötzi-Bogens,
• einen Langbogen, der vor allem durch Robin Hood und die englischen Bogenschützen des Mittelalters bekannt ist,
• einen Reiterbogen, wie man ihn vor allem von den Mongolen und anderen Reitervölkern kennt,
• einen modernen Jagd-Recurve,
• einen olympischen Recurvebogen, wie er als einziger Bogen auch bei den Olympischen Spielen geschossen werden darf,
• einen Compound-Bogen, der in den USA für die Bogenjagd entwickelt wurde und heute auch in Wettkämpfen geschossen wird.

This week my students were able to see many different types of bows, before they actually get to shoot. I was busy all week to gather as many bow types as possible from friends, club mates, family and my own stash. In the end I was able to show them six different bows representing the most important types, that were still in use today:

• a reconstruction of Ötzi's bow (remember: Ötzi is the man from the late Stone Age, found in the ice of the Alps),
• a longbow, which became famous due to Robin Hood and the English archers of the Medieval,
• a Mongol or rider's bow, which is a short, but very strong bow, mostly used by mounted archers
• a modern recurve hunting bow
• an Olympic recurve bow, which is the only bow shot at Olympic Games
• a compound bow, which was originally inventend in the US for bowhunting and is also shot in competitions today.

Micro-Chainmaille

Chainmaille und die Frage, wie klein man das machen kann. Die Ohrringe auf dem Foto sehen zwar nicht so winzig aus, wie sie eigentlich sind, aber die Byzantine-Elemente habe nur einen Durchmesser von 4mm. Die Ringe sind aus 0,6 mm Kupferdraht mit 2 mm ID und folglich einem AR 3,3. Da habe ich teilweise schon eine Lupe gebraucht. Mal sehen, ob's noch kleiner geht, zum Bleistift mit 0,4 mm Draht. B-)

Chainmaille and the question of how small it can be made. The earrings in the pic don't look as tiny as they are in reality, but the Byzantine elements only have a diameter of 4 mm. The jumprings are made from 22gauge copper wire and are coiled around a 2mm dowel, which makes an AR of 3.3. That was the first time I really needed magnifiers for chainmaille. So let's see if there's a possibility to make it smaller, for example with 24gauge wire. B-)

Erste Eindrücke/First Impressions

Wenn ihr zu meinen regelmäßigen Lesern gehört, wißt ihr auch, daß ich neben Perlen und Basteln noch eine weitere Leidenschaft habe: Bogenschießen! Ich bin erst seit ungefähr acht Jahren Bogenschütze, aber es hat mich seit dem ersten Pfeil nicht mehr losgelassen. Und jetzt habe ich mich in ein neues Abenteuer gestürzt, nämlich Bogenschießen zu unterrichten. Aber erstmal muß ich mich bei all den Leuten bedanken, ohne die ich die Aufgabe nie hätte stemmen können. Vielen, vielen Dank an alle Bogentrainer, die mir Bogenschießen beigebracht haben, an alle Pfeilsucher, Ausrüstungsreparierer, Bogenlackierer, Rasenmäher, Zielscheibenbauer, Fotografen und Kurs-Assistenten!



When you read my blog regularly you know that there is a passion besides beading and crafting: archery! I'm only into archery for about 8 years now, but loved it from the very beginning. And now I started a new adventure with teaching archery classes. First I'd like to say that I couldn't have managed all this without the help of so many people, teaching archery to me in my "early years", taking care of broken arrows and missed equipment, mowing the lawn, varnishing bows, taking photos, constructing targets and helping me during classes. Thank you so much (you know who you are)!

Die beiden Premieren-Kurse haben diese Woche angefangen und ich werde jede Woche hier ein kleines Update posten, zum Lesen und Mitfiebern für euch und zur späteren Erinnerung an dieses Abenteuer für mich. Ein Kurs ist gemischt, Männlein und Weiblein, und einer ist ein reiner Herrenkurs und es ist überaus interessant, die Unterschiede zu sehen. Der gemischte Kurs war ein bißchen überwältigt von der Flut an Technik und Informationen und hatte einen etwas langsameren Start als die Herrenkurs, allerdings muß ich der Fairness halber dazu auch sagen, daß der gemischte Kurs sozusagen meine ,,Testgruppe" ist, da ich selbst ja noch nie einer ganzen Gruppe Bogenschießen beigebracht habe. Der Herrenkurs hatte ein klares Ziel vor Augen: WIR WOLLEN SCHIEßEN! SOFORT! Alles andere war uninteressant und ich denke, sie haben den Ausflug in die Geschichte des Bogenschießens nicht so sehr genossen wie der gemischte Kurs. Ich denke, dieser Wille, sofort schießen zu wollen, ist ein Überbleibsel des "Jäger-Gens", das Männern noch immer aus der Steinzeit erhalten geblieben ist. *lol* Versteht mich nicht falsch, denn ich versuche hier nicht, Klischees zu bedienen oder in solchen zu denken, aber es ist interessant, die Unterschiede in der Lernstruktur zu sehen und als Lehrer besser zu werden. Als Lehrer lernt man ja doppelt (wie ich mal irgendwo gelesen habe).

Sofort schießen konnte natürlich niemand, sondern wir uns erstmal kurz durch die Geschichte gewühlt (Ötzi, Robin Hood & Co.), dann einige Sicherheitsvorkehrungen erläutert und uns dann dem Aufwärmen und dem Erlernen der Technik gewidmet. Bei einer technisch so anspruchsvollen Sportart wie Bogenschießen ist das sehr wichtig, um Haltungs- und damit Gesundheitsschäden zu vermeiden. Psychologisch wichtig war, daß alle am Ende zwei Passen schießen und damit einen ersten Eindruck gewinnen konnten, was Bogenschießen heißt. Und nächste Woche sehe ich dann, wieviele Leute ich mit dieser Taktik vergrault habe. ;-)

So the two premiere classes started this week and I decided to post a little update every week, for you to read and for me to keep track of this adventure and remember it later. One class is mixed and one is only men and it is interesting to see the differences. The mixed class was a bit overwhelmed by all the information and technique and had a slower start than the "only men" class, but to be fair the mixed class also serves as my "test drive" class, as I never taught archery to a whole class before. The "only men" class had a clear target: WE WANT TO SHOOT! NOW! Everything else was not interesting and I think they didn't enjoy my historic excursion about archery as much as the mixed class did. I guess this will to get to shooting is a remaining of the "hunter gene" left over from the stone age. *lol* Don't get me wrong, as I'm not trying to think in clichees, but it's interesting to observe the differences in learning structures and get better as a teacher myself. Teaching is twice learning (as I read somewhere).

Of course, no one was allowed to shoot at once, but we made a short excursion into the history of archery (Ötzi, Robin Hood & Co), then some security rules and last but not least some warm-up exercises and a bit of technique. Archery is a very demanding on the technical side and learning it step by step helps to avoid false posture and technique, which can cause health damages in the long run. Important on the psychlogical side was that everyone could shoot two passes and gain a first impression of what archery is. And next week I'll see how many people I scared away with this tactic. ;-)

5 Jahre..../5 years....

.... um das hier fertigzustellen. Donna von This Year's Dozen hat einen Post über ein Schmuckstück geschrieben, das bis zu seiner Fertigstellung 26 Monate gebraucht hat. Das kann ich locker toppen. Das Kreuzstich-Bild hier habe ich vor 5 Jahren angefangen und letzte Woche erst gerahmt. Das lag nicht so sehr daran, daß das Bild nicht fertig gestickt war, sondern daß ich erst keinen Rahmen hatte, dann mehrfach umgezogen bin, dann das Bild nicht mehr gefunden habe und so weiter. Aber letzte Woche war es dann soweit und hier ist nun das fertige Projekt: meine neue Pinnwand mit Kaktus!
Und heute abend fangen die Bogenkurse an! Natürlich werde ich berichten. *rumhibbel* :-)

.... to finish this. Donna over at This Year's Dozen posted about a jewelry set that took 26 months to finish. But I can say that I needed 5 years to fnish this x-stitch picture and get it framed. It wasn't so much about the picture not being ready, but first I didn't have a frame, then I had to move several times, then the pic got lost and so on. But last week the time has come and here is the finished project: my new studio dashboard with cactus!
Oh yes, and tonight the archery classes start! Can't wait! Of course I'll post about it. :-)

Bogen-Kurse/Archery Classes

Ich habe euch im Bloggerland nicht vergessen, aber ich bin gerade sehr damit beschäftigt, die Bogenkurse vorzubereiten. Nächste Woche fangen sie an und sie sind eine Premiere für mich, für den Platz und für den Verein, also bitte Daumen drücken, daß alles glatt geht. :-)
Die Nachfrage war überwältigend, aber für Herbst 2010 sind noch Plätze frei! Hier kann man sich anmelden.

I didn't forget about you out there in Blogland, but I'm busy preparing my archery classes. They start next week and are a premiere for me, for our new archery ground and for the club, so please cross your fingers, that everything works well. :-)

Gürteltasche/Belt Pouch

Diese kleine Gürteltasche habe ich vor kurzem aus feinstem silbergrauem Wildleder gemacht. Das ist ein sehr einfaches Muster mit nur drei Nähten und drei Lederstücken. Der Verschluß ist ein geschnitzter Knopf aus Knochen.

Another thing I made lately is this little belt pouch from finest silver grey suede. This is a pretty easy pattern, made with only three seams and three pieces of leather. The closure is a carved bone button.
