Margie & Me Challenge: 2010 Color Throwdown

Wow, ich komme gerade von Marcies Blog La Bella Joya zurück, weil heute das Voting für die letzte Margie & Me Challenge in diesem Jahr begonnen hat. Marcie hat uns fünf Farbpaletten zur Auswahl gegeben und wir mußte uns eine davon aussuchen, um ein Schmuckstück zu entwerfen. Ich habe mich für ,,Titian the Venetian" und sein Gemälde ,,Venus von Urbino" entschieden.

OMG, I just came back from Marcie's blog La Bella Joya, as the voting for the finals of the Margie & Me Challenge is open. Marcie decided to challenge us for the last time in 2010. We got five color palettes to choose from and make a piece of jewelry based on it. I chose to go with Titian the Venetian and his painting "Venus of Urbino".




Und hier ist mein Werk: meine persönliche Venus von Urbino. Die Halskette besteht aus einem meiner FIMO-Gesichter, vielen Glasperlen, Süßwasserzuchtperlen, ein Perlmutt-Rechteck und einen handgemachten Kupferverschluß. Es war das erste Mal, daß ich die sogenannten Wire Guards verwendet habe und ich muß sagen, ich mag sie wirklich.

And here is what I made: my personal Venus of Urbino. The necklace features one of my pc face cabs, lots of glass beads, freshwater pearls, a mop rectangle and a handmade copper s-clasp. It was the first time I used wireguards in a piece and I have to say I like how they look.

Zwischen den Jahren/In between the years: Perchten

Die sehen zum Fürchten aus, gell? Sollen sie ja auch! Nach meinem Post über die Rauhnächte bin ich über dieses Foto gestolpert, das mein Vater in Salzburg gemacht hat. Die Masken haben allerdings nichts mit der Fasnacht zu tun, sondern werden von den Perchten getragen. Die Perchtenläufe sind im Alpenraum ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Brauchtums während der Rauhnächte. Die Perchten sollen durch ihr fürchterliches (,,schieches", sprich ,,schiaches") Aussehen den Winter bzw. die bösen Geister des Winters vertreiben. Ihr Name leitet sich vermutlich von der Sagengestalt der Frau Perchta ab.



Do they look scary? So that's what they should do! After my post about the 12 Days of Christmas I stumbled upon this photo my Dad took in Salzburg. The masks have nothing to do with carnival, but are worn by the "Perchten". In the Alpine region the processions of the Perchten are an important part of the traditions during the 12 Days. With their ugly (called "schiech") appearance the Perchten should scare away winter or the bad spirits of winter. The name refers to the mystic figure of "Frau Perchta".

Rauhnächte/12 Days of Christmas

Da wir ja mitten in den Rauhnächten sind, wollte ich etwas darüber schreiben und gerne hören, ob es bei euch auch alte Traditionen für diese Zeit gibt, wie z. B. keine Wäsche zu waschen oder sich nicht die Haare zu schneiden. Meistens handelt es sich bei den Rauhnächten um die 12 Nächte zwischen dem 24.Dezember und dem 6. Januar, aber es sind auch andere Zeiträume denkbar, z.B. zwischen der Wintersonnenwende und Neujahr. Die wichtigsten Rauhnächte sind:

21./22. Dezember: Thomasnacht (Wintersonnenwende)

24./25. Dezember: Heiligabend/Christnacht

31.Dezember/1. Januar: Silvesternacht

5./6. Januar: Epiphaniasnacht/Erscheinung des Herrn

Die Bräuche, die mit dieser Zeit zusammenhängen, sind sehr alt und stammen aus vorchristlicher Zeit. Ihren Ursprung haben sie vermutlich in der Zeitrechnung nach dem Mondjahr, bei der ein Jahr nur 354 Tage hat. Um mit der Zeitrechnung nach dem Sonnenjahr (365 Tage) in Einklang zu bleiben, wurden zum Ende des Jahres 11 Tage (bzw. 12 Nächte) eingeschoben. Mit der fortschreitenden Christianisierung wurden diese Bräuche dann von christlichen Bräuchen überlagert. Wenn ihr mehr über die Rauhhnächte lesen wollt, dann klickt auf den Link oben. Was ihr auch macht, genießt die stille Zeit zwischen den Jahren!

As we're in the middle of the 12 Days of Christmas I'd like to write something about them and would like to know if there are any traditions you keep through these days, for example not doing any laundry or not cutting your hair. In most cases the 12 Days of Christmas are the nights between December 24th and January 6th, but also other time spans are possible like between Winter Solstice and New Year. The most important of those 12 days are:

December 21st/22nd: Thomas Night (Winter Solstice)
December 24th/25th: Christmas Eve/Holy Night
Dezember 31st/January 1st: New Year's Eve/Silvester Night
January 5th/6th: Epiphany

The traditions celebrated during these nights are very old and date back to pre-Christian days. They have their origin in the calculation of time based on the moon calendar. The lunar year only has 354 days and to keep in line with the solar year there were 11 days (12 nights) entered into the moon calendar. Neuer Jeans-Quilt/Another Jeans Quilt

Mir gefällt der Denim Rag Quilt von Patchwork-and-Quilting.com so gut, daß ich nun schon den zweiten genäht habe. Dieser hier wird ein Geschenk für meine Bruder und meine Schwägerin, aber pssssssssst! Ich hoffe, er gefällt ihnen.

I like the pattern of the Denim Rag Quilt by Patchwork-and-Quilting.com so much that I made a second one. This will become a gift for my brother and my SIL, but sssshhhhhhht! I hope they like it.

Ich habe den Quilt gestern fertiggestellt, indem ich ihn gewaschen und durch den Trockner gejagt habe, damit die Nahtzugaben auch schön ausfransen. Ich habe ihn bisher nur einmal gewaschen, da das Ausfransen mit der Zeit und durch den Gebrauch sowieso kommt. Er ist also sozusagen nie fertig. Obwohl ich den Quilt nun schon zum zweiten Mal nähe, ist es trotzdem noch viel Arbeit und ich empfehle hierfür auf jeden Fall zwei Werkzeuge, die wenn auch nicht notwendig, aber doch sehr nützlich sind. Das erste ist natürlich mein ,,Arbeitspferd", eine Pfaff-Nähmaschine, die ich von meiner Mutter ,,geerbt" habe, als sie sich eine neue gekauft hat. Wenn ihr über die Anschaffung einer Nähmaschine nachdenkt, dann zieht auf jeden Fall die Anschaffung einer Markenmaschine in Betracht und nicht irgendeines Billig-Glumps. Das ist gut investiertes Geld.

I finished the quilt yesterday by washing and drying it to make the seam allowances fray. I only washed it once so far, as the fraying will come with time and use. So this is still a work in progress. Although I made the pattern twice it is still much work and I recommend two tools that are neccessary for that or at least very, very useful. First is my "workhorse", a Pfaff sewing machine, which I "heired" from my Mom, when she bought herself a new one. When you think about buying a sewing machine, seriously consider a branded one and not a cheapo. That money is well invested.

Das zweite nützliche Werkzeug ist diese Allzweck-Schere mit Feder, die sich selbsttätig wieder öffnet. Ich habe die nahtzugaben an meinem ersten Quilt mit einer normalen Schere und später mit einem Seitenschneider geschnitten, weil vier Lagen Stoff unglaublich schwer zu schneiden sind. Mit dem Teilchen hier ging es SEHR viel flotter und einfacher. Ich habe die Schere für fünf Euronen in einem Discounter gekauft, Wirklich sehr nützlich!

Second useful tool is those self-opening shears. I made my first denim quilt with scissors and then changed to a flush cutter, because cutting the seam allowances was so hard on the hands. But this thing makes it a LOT easier and faster. I bought mine for five euros at a discounter and use it a lot cutting leather, cardboard, heavy fabrics, wire (yes, wire!) and others. Very useful tool!

Drawing Lab 2011

Etwas, das ich schon immer lernen wollte, ist Zeichnen. Ich bin nur mäßig talentiert, aber manchmal könnte ich es schon brauchen, wenn ich mal eine Skizze einer Idee machen möchte, die nicht aussieht wie die schwer entziffernden Zeichnungen vom Aufbau einer Zelle, die mein ehemaliger Biolehrer immer an die Tafel gekritzelt hat. Also kam es mir gerade recht, daß Jeannie einen Online-Kurs anbietet und das zu einem Preis, zu dem man fast nicht nein sagen kann. Man kann bei "Drawing Lab 2011" selbst entscheiden, wieviel Zeit man investieren möchte und ob man seine Werke präsentieren will oder nicht (falls die Zeichnung doch aussieht wie vom Biolehrer ;-)). Die Materialien, die man benötigt, hat eigentlich jeder einigermaßen kreative Mensch zu Hause: Wasserfarben, Buntstifte, Zeichenpapier etc. Also überlegt euch, ob ihr nicht auch mitmachen wollt, zusammen mit mir und einigen anderen tollen Künstlern, die ebenfalls etwas neues im neuen Jahr lernen wollen. Würde mich freuen!

So something I wanted to learn for along time now is drawing. I'm not really talented, but sometimes I could use this skill to sketch a design I have in mind and it should not look like the drawing of a onion skin cell that my biology teacher used to make on the chalkboard. So it came in handy that Jeannie offers and online class about learning to draw for a price that is more than affordable. When participating in "Drawing Lab 2011" you can decide how much time you'd like to put in this and if you want to post your weekly work or not (just in case it really looks like the cell drawings of your biology teacher ;-)). The materials needed should be found in the stash of more or less creative people: watercolors, cardboard, colored pencils etc. SO think about signing up and joining this adventure with me and other great artists, who would like to learn something ne in the new year. Would love to see you there!

Neue Bogenausrüstung/New Archery Equipment

Ich habe einen Langbogen, den ich von einem befreundeten Bogenschützen bekommen habe. Leider ist es aber ein Linkshand-Bogen, d.h. er hat die Pfeilauflage auf der falschen Seite für einen Rechtshandschützen wie mich. Aber wen interessiert schon die Pfeilauflage bei einem Langbogen, wenn man ihn auch über den Handrücken schießen kann. Also habe ich die zuerst angeklebte Pfeilauflage wieder abgerupft und mir dafür einen Handschutz aus Leder gemacht. Normale Lederhandschuhe sind nicht dick genug, um sich vor den scharfen Federn zu schützen.

I have a longbow that was a trade with a fellow archer. Sadly it is a left hand longbow, which means having the shelf rest on the wrong side for me, as I'm a right hand shooter. But who cares with a longbow. First I shot the bow with an arrow rest I glued to the left side, but wasn't comfortable with it. It looked wrong to me shooting a longbow with a plastic arrow rest. So I ripped it off and wanted to shoot the bow with the arrow resting on the back of my hand. It works, but I still needed a hand guard to protect my hand from the sharp feathers. A leather glove isn't thick enough and the feathers cut through it, so I made this:

Und hier könnt ihr sehen, wie der Pfeil auf dem Handrücken liegt. Ich umwickle ja immer meine Federn, aber ein Handschutz ist trotzdem zu empfehlen. Ich weiß warum! OK, morgen gibt's wieder einen Perlenpost.

Perlen Poesie Nr. 7

Seit Freitag ist sie nun offiziell draußen: Perlen Poesie Nr. 7. An sich nichts Besonderes, aber aufmerksame Leser meines Blogs haben bemerkt, daß es eben doch was Besonderes ist. Weil ich nämlich ein Design in eben jener Ausgabe habe! Ich habe mich schon wie eine Schneekönigin gefreut, als mein Design angenommen wurde, aber ich durfte es erst jetzt mit euch teilen, nachdem die Zeitschrift herausgekommen ist.

Since last Friday the new Perlen Poesie No 7 is available at the newsstands. Nothing special you say? But it is for me as I have my first design ever published in this issue! I already did the happy dance back in summer when they accepted my design for publication. But I wasn't allowed to share with you until now.

Stacheliges Schmuckstück/Spiky Piece of Jewelry

Heute bin ich durch einen Kommentar auf Lisas A Bead A Day-Blog daran erinnert worden, daß ich ganz vergessen habe, das tollste Armband zu zeigen, daß mir die letzten Jahre untergekommen ist. Lisa macht gerade ein flaches Peyote-Armband und ich habe einige Ideen aufgeschrieben, wie man den das Armband zusätzlich verzieren könnte. Und da kam mir das ,,Touch Me"-Armband in den Sinn, das ich von Evalie im Zuge des letzten Armband-Swaps auf BeadingDaily bekommen habe. Das Armband ist aus einem drei Perlen breiten Peyoteband gemacht und dann mit gaaaaaaanz vielen Daggerperlen verziert. Wenn man das Armband trägt, bewegen sich die Dagger und rascheln und klappern. Ihr könnt mir glaube, wenn ich sage, daß ,,Touch Me" genau der richtige Name für das Armband ist!

Today Lisa over at A Bead A Day reminded me, that I completely forgot to post one of the most awesome bracelets I saw in the last years. Lisa is making a flat peyote bracelet and I posted a comment to make some suggestions on embellishing the strip. And the "Touch Me" bracelet came to my mind. That bracelet was given to me by Evalie, a BeadingDaily member, as she had my name in the bracelet swap we organize every three months on BD. The bracelet is made of a 3 bead wide peyote strip and lots (and I mean LOTS) of dagger beads stitched on top of it. The daggers move around when you wear the bracelet and make a clicking, rustling sound. Believe me, the name "Touch Me" is the perfect choice for this!

Planeten-Serie: Phobos & Deimos/The Planet Series: Phobos & Deimos

Zur Zeit versuche ich, meine Fotos ein wenig zu verbessern. Schöne Fotos sind schließlich einer der Gründe, warum Menschen sich etwas anschauen. Eines der größten Probleme meiner Fotos war immer der Hintergrund. Ich habe meine Sachen meistens auf Scrapbooking-Papier abgelichtet und manchmal auch auf Sperrholzplatten, aber das hat irgendwie immer vom eigentlichen Motiv abgelenkt oder die Fotos sahen matt aus. Auch die Belichtung war alles andere als ideal (s. unten).

Lately I'm working hard on my photography skills. I have to when I wanted to show and sell my jewelry online. One of the biggest problems seemed to be the background. I used to photograph my items on large sheets of scrapbook paper or pieces of wood, but sometimes even that distracts from the item photographed or the pics looked dull due to the matte surface of the paper or the wood (see below). I also had problems with the lighting, as I do not have light tent.


Ein großer Sprung vorwärts war die Idee von Cat und Moira, die Sachen einfach auf großen Fliesen abzulichten. Seitdem benutze ich meistens eine große, weiße Fliese mit einer leichten Marmorierung. Die Belichtung ist dadurch selbst bei Bewölkung deutlich besser und die Farben kommen auch sehr gut heraus (s. unten). Eines der Fliesenbilder ist sogar mein neuer Avatar geworden. Wie läuft es denn bei euch mit dem Fotografieren?

A big leap forward was the idea of two of my fellow bloggers, Cat and Moira, to use big floor tiles as a background. Now I mostly use a white tile with a shiny, slightly marbled surface. The lighting seems to be a lot better, even when it's cloudy and the colors come out great (see below). One of the "tile" pics even became my new avatar. So what are your experieinces and adventures with photographing?

Eine fröhlichen Nikolaustag an alle, die ihn heute feiern! Auf dem Foto seht ihr die Mini-,,Lebkuchen"häuser, die ich für Familie und Freunde gemacht habe. Sind die nicht süß?

Margie & Me: # 129 Mosaic of Color

Ich bin so aufgeregt, denn es ist wieder Zeit für die Enthüllung einer neuen Margie & Me Challenge! Und ich mag mein Stück, daß ich dieses Mal eingereicht habe, sehr (obwohl ich am Anfang dachte, daß es eine absolute Design-Katastrophe wird *lach*). Das Farbschema war die # 129 aus Margie Deebs Buch "The Beader's Color Palette" und heißt Mosaic of Color. Das Farbschema ist durch die wunderschönen Mosaike in der islamischen Architektur inspiriert. Wenn ihr das Buch habt, schaut es euch unbedingt an. Es lohnt sich.

It's time for the reveal of another Margie & Me Challenge! I'm so excited about this one, because I love the outcome (although I though in the beginning that it would become a complete design disaster *lol*). The color scheme was the # 129 in Margie Deeb's book "The Beader's Color Palette" and is called Mosaic of Color. The color scheme is inspired by the mosaics found in Islamic architecture. If you have the book, check it out. It's really worth to have a look.

Es war für mich wirklich schwierig, die passenden Farben für mein Stück zusammenzustellen und selbst nachdem ich angefangen hatte zu arbeiten, war ich nicht wirklich sicher, ob das Design so aussieht, wie ich es haben wollte. Die Farben schienen nicht zusammen zu passen und ich habe einige Fehler während des Stickens gemacht. Aber als ich dann die Kanten gestickt und den Verschluß angebracht habe, war es exakt das, was ich mir vorgestellt hatte! Die Farben, die Form des gesamten Stückes und das Design: perfekt! Ich habe dieses gestickte Armband "Marrakesch" genannt, weil das die Stadt is, an die ich zuerst denke, wenn ich schöne islamische Architektur und Mosaike sehe. Vielen Dank auch wieder an Marcie (und Margie) für die Inspiration durch ihre Challenge!

I had a real hard time to nail down the colors I wanted to work with and even after I started working, I wasn't sure, if the design was what I intended. The colors don't seem to match and I made several mistakes while working. But with adding the edging and the clasp it was exactly what I wanted! The colors, the shape of the whole piece and the design: perfect! I called my bead embroidered cuff "City of Marrakech", because this city is what comes to my mind when I see beautiful Islamic architecture and mosaics. Thanks to Marcie (and Margie) for inspiring us all once more with her challenge!
